persistent UTI

I took my dog to the vet for, as I call it, "spa day" (grooming). I also had him rechecked for his UTI that he had about a month ago. Sure enough, the vet called and said he has UTI again. They are putting him on a stronger medication this time and sending off his pee for culture growth. :uhoh:

So, I guess my question is, is there something to be worried about? I can't really find any info in cyberspace, except some glazed over comments about Cushings and diabetes. :confused2: I know this may sound like a stupid question, but could it have anything to do with his food? He's eating Innova puppy right now and as soon as the bag gets low enough, I'm going to make the transition to EVO.

Is there something I can put in his water or let him drink that will help him stay hydrated or curtail the UTI from coming back?

I don't think that UTI's have anything to do with the food that is fed. Zoe has UTI's at least twice a year. I looked online the other day to see if undiagnosed UTI's will cause kidney issues and they will. Zoe already has kidney issues and since her former owners were not as attuned to her behaviors and probably didn't know that she had a UTI, I wanted to know if that's what caused it. I don't think you have to worry about that with your pup. I think some people on here have mentioned before to give them cranberries, because like humans it will help them keep UTI's at bay. I'm not sure how many they should have daily so hopefully someone will answer that for you. Of course I tried giving Zoe a dried cranberry the other night and she turned her nose up at it. I know that GNC carries a cranberry pill so I may get some of those and consult my vet as to how much to give her. If I get an answer, I will let you know. Hope that helps a little. :smile2:

Cranberry extract

The other day I was speaking with my vetin regards to Kia and her ongoing problems with Unhealthy Urine . She is due to get an Ultrasound to see what the problem is. Because even on antibiotics she still shows WBC, RBC, Crystals and Inflammation . But she did suggest to try Cranberry Extract. It 's sold at most drug Natural remedies sections. It's sold in capsule form just like the Omega 3 Fish oil is. Just thought it might be worth a shot.

Yum Yogurt

~ My little sable *Emily* recently developed a urinary tract infection and she was given a daily antibiotic tablet as well as a teaspoon of plain yogurt that her veterinarian very highly recommended.

She was fine within only a few days, but I decided that I will continue adding a spoonful of plain yogurt to her breakfast and dinner every day and I am doing this with my tricolor *Sadie's* meals also.

{it is sooo entirely good for their systems and they absolutely LOVE it besides}!

I simply stir one teaspoon of completely unflavored plain natural yogurt into their ordinary kibble and they honestly do love the stuff even though it is so very, very good for them

Happy is on cranberries - I actually bought the tablets since most of their other pills are tablets. He gets one am and one pm- they are 450 mg per tablet. I have purchased them at Walmart and various drug stores. wherever they have them and they are the least expensive. Pill time at our house is squeeze cheese on a spoon with the pill in the cheese- doesn't have to be hidden. they lick the spoon until I take it away. This came about because Callie has to take thyroid meds and she was kind of shut down when she came here. so my trainer recommended this method since there was no force involved and now they come running when I tell them it's pill time.
