Phoebe. Rant!

As many of you know, at one week short of 5 months Phoebe broke her front leg. It was mended with a plate and the Dr recommended removing it in 6 months. She recovered well and since she had to be spayed as well, it was decided to do both surgeries at the same time. Fast forward 5 months and one week. Because she still hadn't gone through heat, I was concerned that the timing would be screwed up and asked if we could do the surgery earlier than planned. I took her in today to have everything done, and just received a call telling me that the spay was done but when they got in there the bone had grown completely over the plate. He would have had to remove a third to the bone to get it out. I feel sick that she had to undergo another incision in her leg for nothing. I pick her up tomorrow morning and I'm not sure I can look her in the eye. I am really sorry that I didn't go in after a few months for an X-ray to check on the process! Now she is stuck with a plate in her leg.

Sorry to hear this. It must be really frustrating for you. I hope Phoebe's not bothered by it at all, and bounces back quickly from the spay.

Yikes, I can understand your being upset about this! Is retaining the plate going to make any difference in her mobility? Give little Phoebe a hug from me.

So I picked her up this morning. She has exposed stitches on her belly and a soft bandage on her leg and the dreaded cone. She can walk but is very subdued. Doesn't want any kibble but accepted some cheese with her antibiotic. I saw the X-ray of her leg. The plate was indeed encapsulated by bone. The whole idea of thing was to remove a foreign body from her that could possibly cause discomfort or problems in the future. So much for that idea. Dogs, and people can live their entire lives with plates and now Phoebe is going to be one of them.
