Bi-factored means that he carries the bi-gene. When a dog has 2 copies of the bi-gene, they are a bi-color (bi black or bi blue).

Sorry there, mis-typed and left off the "i" in Bi-factored.

I know the genes for Emma (sable merle) and Figaro (tricolor) based upon the puppies that they produced; because they produced several bi-black puppies I know that each of them are bi-factored.

Did you get your puppy from a "breeder"? And I'm only asking because this throws a huge red flag for me if you did, and you don't even know who the parents are. :\

But getting on topic, Hope looks like a tri to me :) And I would have guessed that Jake was just a sable, but if his papers say he is a sable merle, then the merle must have been more visible when he was born. This can happen, and over time the merling becomes less noticeable (in sables).
