So he is 16 inches and 19 lbs now.
when we flew over Christmas he was probably 15" and 16lbs
Thanksgiving he was @13" and 14 lbs.

This is a L sturdibag. The XL is too big for airline requirements (its 2 inches taller and longer) so you are really skating on thin ice if you try it. its stressful enough flying with a dog cause you never know is an attendant is going to deny you boarding....I read all sorts of horror stories...
 
I might buy an XL sturdibag used off of eBay for just in case...
so I can fly him if I ABSOLUTELY have to (and its a decent carrier).
But not an option as much as an emergency write in possibility.

oddly enough, he was quite content crammed in the bag!

He certainly has grown! He does look adorable in that bag but I agree, it’s doubtful they’d let him fly in that. I’ve heard some say that the dog has to be able to stand up in it, and you never know if your going to get that one agent who asks to see if he can.
 
oddly enough, most people seem to have their dog in the smallest bag it will squeeze into.
I saw a teacup Yorkie in a very small bag that would have been more comfy in a larger bag that would have still fit and been on the small side.
guess people want their legroom?

only people with borderline sized dogs seem to have an issue with the gate attendants, even if the smaller dogs are in carriers that are too small to stand and turn around in.

all that sheltie fur doesn't help either.
