Planning for a Sheltie.

Hi,
Just wanted to say hello and comment on what a great site this is for Sheltie owners. I have fallen in love with the breed and plan to have one when we are ready. I find reading the posts very helpful for future planning. It's hard to wait for the optimal time to get a puppy, but I have found a reputable breeder so that part of the search is done. I am hoping to have a puppy by next summer when I can take a lot of time off work to settle the puppy in nicely. Until then, I will keep informing myself and enjoying reading these forums.

All I can say that is a LONG wait til next Summer, hahaha
But good for you to wait until everything is optimal and for searching for a responsible breeder and getting info before you bring a Sheltie baby home :biggrin2:

Welcome! May I recommend the book Sheltie Talk -- it's the Sheltie bible! Also, you and your puppy might benefit from The Art of Raising a Puppy by The Monks of New Skete.
 
I planned as well, didnt find a breeder, but moved, paid off all my bills, waited till old house sold before getting a pup so we wouldnt have issues with leaving every time there was a showing. Now I was ready but coming up blank everywhere with breeders, shelters etc so I went ahead with some projects, this brings of course openings now for the chance to get a dog in the middle of home remodel, ( isnt that how things work) but I am finishing up my kitties health checks and dentals, had new closet shelves installed, waiting weeks now ( no show handymen arrgh) for cabinets to be installed and painting bedroom, then I will consider myself back to the search with everything behind me and full attention and less noise and chaos happening with a new doggy coming into the fold. I still have furniture to get rid of since this house is much smaller then I been use to, but I think once the sawing and hammering is done it will be better in the long run for shyness and nerves and the whole fear in a new place factor and help transitions.
I am actually considering selling the new house to find one where I can have a yard, as that is really what I would like is more property.
GOOD LUCK to you, I never ever thought I would be waiting so long, but I know now I am really ready and the preparations and reading I have done will make be forget the long wait when I find her out there somewhere. Keep us posted.

Absolutley, Toffee's mom, it is! a long wait..I have a 13.5 year old Scottish Terrier so it's not as though I am without some canine companionship, but the Sheltie has some special qualities I really like the sounds of so it's worth the wait I am hoping. Sheltie Talk, that is a must I am realizing, and I have liked what I've read of the approach the Monks of New Skete take with their pups. It's a book worth studying.

I think I might be a one dog at a time person- I am nervous about the idea of having to fend off a fun loving pup from an arthritic ol gal who likes other dogs but sure loves a lot of peace and quiet. Rosie doesn't even really want to be petted let alone jumped on or herded.

Thanks for the welcome....I did find/visit a very sweet pup , very calm, pretty at the breeders...but I just have to be sure we are all up to the task so letting this one go is right but hard.
