Playing recall games, enviroment rewards

haha, COOOKIEEE.. see? I can picutre it now.. coookie instead of come :)
So maybe the Come queue was poisoined in the past, lol Just use Cookie when ya need them to come to you!

It's all a matter of knowing what is the highest reward for your dog :biggrin2:

Playing is a BIG motivator and gets the dog engaged with you, it is also a HUGE stress reliever.. So encouraging that behaviour was super important to me.
I use tugging to get him focused on me, instead of the other people or dogs or whatever else. Didn't happen over night, it meant putting the real cookies away and get him revved up to be playing with me and making (yet again) a fool of myself LOL
Fun video to watch- Sandstorm would like playing with Toffee! We use come and cookie also. It is used when Sandstorm has to come in right away, no matter what. This could be if we see a car coming down our road (which is not often). He doesn't have to see the cookie, but he does get one once inside. We only use it around the house when off leash (out to pee, for instance.) I wonder if it would work while on a walk? We haven't needed to try it- in an emergency situation I think he would come. Hmmmm.

Yep, that's exactly how I shout it out! But I reserve it for the really big moments...like when Indy has gone hunting mink at the cottage and has disappeared into the bush out of eyesight. It takes a few COOOOKIEEEES! to get his attention, but it works! Cookies are apparently better than mink!

I'm always very impressed with people who can have their dogs off leash all the time (like Toffee!)

My two dogs are incredibly different when it comes to recalls. We started working with Lexi on her recall immediately...from day 1. She will stop on a DIME and turn and run towards us as fast as she can. There has only been one time where she didn't come when called...but I'm now very wary with her and get her attention on me and the cookies before distractions appear.

Bentley is the opposite. Even in the face of no distractions his recalls are slow (well, everything about him is slow!) In the dogpark he completely ignores me. Chasing other dogs, bikes and people is more rewarding than any treat. I think it ties into his same mentality that causes his reactivity--his brain is off and his instinct kicks in. Maybe I'm making excuses, but in both cases I've found no way to get through to him. He has gotten off his leash in our front yard before...several times he chased dogs, bikes, etc...and we had to run after him. Other times he just runs around and just doesn't come back. It's very frustrating. Of course, in a class/working setting his recall is fine.

Bentley has been sharing notes with Che re recall

When we are walking off leash I say "this way" and they turn on the dime and run to me for cookies. "This way" to them means that they are not going to get restrained, but get to continue their romp, just getting a little snack break
