Pogo and new puppy advise

Hi everyone!

I brought home my new puppy last night (if you can say that-he's 17 lbs and 9 weeks old!). I know Pogo is just trying to figure things out and I shouldn't be so mother hen, but we all know we want all our furkids to get along right off the bat.

Pogo seems to be jealous and a tad toy aggressive. I've bought the new pup new toys and even new toys for Pogo. But it's typical-my toys are my toys and your toys are my toys. Pogo plays well with other dogs when he goes to day camp to play, but I'm sure it's different since this pup is daring to encroach on his territory. I've been sure to shower Pogo with love and praise and treats and even allow him on the couch to let him know he isn't going to lose his him.

Any advise on how long this might last before they get used to each other or what I can do to ease the tension? I meant for the new pup to be a playmate for Pogo, not to turn Pogo into a jealous aggressive dog.

I've had many dogs even growing up and when you are first introducing them try to keep it in as neutral area as possible. Let them have their own private place where the other pup is not allowed until they start playing and enjoy each others companionship. It usually takes a day or two. Some longer, depends. Remember they both want you to themselves, just like kids. Good luck on their introduction phase.:wink2:
 
Hi and congratulations on the new pup! I will have to go and see the picture :biggrin2:. When I brought Maia home not even a month ago, Chinook, who normally LOVES other dogs, was a bit standoffish with her and ME! It took him about a day to come around. By the end of the second day, they were friends and he was happy with her and me. Now they are best friends and play all day together. So give them time, they will come around and you will have the best time with them.

When it comes to the toy possessiveness, that there is your problem. None of the toys actually belong to Pogo. The are not HIS toys. They are YOUR toys and you allow him to play with them. He just doesn't seem to have received that memo. :lol:

If there is any toy possessiveness issues in any of the dogs in your house, then the toys should not be left laying around but put up and controlled by you. Neither of my guys have possessive problems, so toys are left out. But if either of them did begin to exhibit possessiveness, then the toys would be taken away. Put them up in a toy box on a shelf or in a cupboard and bring them out when it is time to play with them. Play with the dogs, encourage them to play with each other, and when play time is over, pick the toys up and put them away again. If either of them is becoming possessive, take the toy away from them, game over. The first thing I teach a new dog (pup or otherwise) is that I really am a pretty fun person to play with, but we play by my rules. Play along and we will have a great time, don't want to follow my rules then play time stops.
 
Thanks GeeRome and everyone else for your help. I will do follow your advise about the toy thing. It seems the answers are so simple and logical, yet I can never figure it out on my own! :lol:

They both (and me too) just got up from a nap and the two played well with each other-one would grab a toy and other would chase, then vise verse. Pogo didn't show any aggressive behavior-no teeth showing, no growling, or body tensing. He was being a good boy! :biggrin2: So, hopefully, we have turned a corner and all will be fine.
 
I'm so glad that you finally got your new pup! I know you were having a tough time tracking one down. Where did you finally find him?
 
Hi Barb-

I finally found the one at our local border collie rescue. I wanted another Sheltie, but couldn't find a good match at our rescue and I really wanted another dog from a rescue or pound-I have such a soft spot for those dogs.

We are having some pains over here-with Pogo and Samson getting used to each other. I won't even start with the cat! :lol:
