Are there any special tips for potty training a Sheltie?

I have 1 strike against me in that the woman I got her from never took her outside :eek2: She had hardwood floors and would just clean up after them.

What I do is take her outside and if she pees/poos, I praise her heavily and give her a small bite of a treat. She has come to expect the treat now and I guess that would be a good sign, except now once in a while she will do a fake squat :lol:

The other issue I am having is that the girl can really hold it if she doesn't want to go outside. There's no rhyme or reason to her potty schedule. She does pretty good overnight. I take her out once during the night (usually around 3 am after going to bed at 11 pm) and then when we get up in the morning at 7 am. But yesterday, she went from 7 am until 3 pm with no pee/poo. All she wants to do is play!

Another thing is that she is very skittish about noises. And if she hears a noise outside while trying to potty, she runs for the house, even mid-poo.

So, any tips/advice on potty training my girl would be appreciated :)
 
I usually start with the house training pads along with bringing the pup outside on lead and take a word, she will associate with doing their business.:lol: I use to use with Jewel DO pee-pee, and do a good girl.:o As soon as she would go tons of praise just as you are doing. But I found between pads and frequent take-outs on lead with the chosen words. This did fantastic for me. As far as the skiddishtoward sound if you are with her on lead you are able to reassure the pup that it's OK because you are there with them.:winkgrin: Best of luck. OOps almost forgot with the puppy pads I would just keep bringing the pads closer and closer to the door so she would know where to go to ask to go out for potty.:lol:

Just wanted to give an update:

Madison is doing great with her potty training! She hasn't had an accident in the house in 4 days! :biggrin2: She's understanding the word "potty" and will go to the door when you ask, and goes to the door when not asked if she has to go, we just have to catch her doing it.

She's still skittish about noises around her outside, but doesn't seem as bad as before. When she hears something and turns to run back to the house, I just make her keep walking with me, reassuring her she's ok. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't :lol:

Sounds Like Maddies' got it.:yes: The skittishness may be just her temperment. When Jewel was around she was also very skittish . She use to get as close to us as she could. If we were in the house and she heard something she would jump in your lap and give you one of those sheltie looks and pawing , HELP ME.:lol:
 
LOL - That's how Madi is. She's come a runnin', jump in your lap and then bark her head off like she's a big brave dog :lol:
 
If any of mine have reacted to a bang or a noise outside I tend to ignore them, if you tell them it's alright you are teaching them to run/come to you if they hear something they don't like. If you ignore them and just keep walking they will come to realise that the noise is nothing to be afraid of and will stop reacting, you obviously have to make sure that your fur baby can't run of somewhere where he she could be hurt. I used to be able to walk Ailsa out side when there was fireworks going of and she never bated an eyelid, Arran is also very good and Abby is getting there. My sisters staffie girl was petrified of any loud noise and it was heartbreaking to see her try to climb up my sisters back to escape.

Yep, I think that's why she's doing better, cause I make her keep walking instead of running back to the house. I've actually only picked her up once and that was when the train came by and blew it's whistle. I thought she was gonna keel over right there.
