Private lessons or classes?

I agree! Go for it if you find private lessons in your price range and that fits your schedule.

That is how I started with Kyara who is nervous/shy around strangers and then I eventually took group classes to get her used to having strangers around the ring. It was much easier at that point cause she had learned that agility was all about fun thanks to the private classes.

Honestly, I find I have learned much more in the private lessons than in the group classes (but I do realize it depends on the training facility, trainer and other factors). In the group classes, Kyara and I practice in a different environment, the techniques and tricks we learned in our private lessons.

Thanks! I am a Bow Wow flix subscriber and they have almost all those! I've got the 2x2 weaves and bought the bases a year or three ago ...

That is going to be the biggest challenge right? Weaves? And being on my right...

I think you will be surprised how easy it is. With your great obedience background it should not be a problem. In my neck of woods privates are pricey at $100/hour so I like ClantyreSheltie approach- lots of homework and occasional private good way to go. Videotaping yourself is great tool to see challenges and problems.
Mary Ellen Barry has 6 DVD set on agility foundations too, well worth renting since you are on Bowwowflix. You will have more than enough homework to do for long while:wink2:

Is it unreasonable to expect being able to complete a NJP course by next April?

It all depends on how much time you devote to it. Honestly I've seen people take private classes and/or group lessons for years and never get to competition. What you do in any class or private lesson is only a small portion. If you don't go home and practice it can take SO much longer. So whichever you decide, your dog will move up faster, the more often you work on it together.
