Proin for Urinary Incontinence

Chloe was just prescribed PROIN for urinary incontinence and I was told that she does not have a UTI and it is probably incontinence. I am still not fully convinced that this is the case.

Anway, I wanted to throw this out there to see if anyone has used this drug before, or have heard of any negative side effects from it.

My baby's saga continues...............

Try chiropractic. My chiropractor had an incontinent lab they wanted to put on Proin. Being a kind of anti-pharmaceutical kind of person, he tried adjusting her first. He found that when she was incontinent, she had a specific subluxation that once corrected, the incontinence would go away.

He also put her on a supplement that acted like the hormonal supplements, and that helped as well. I can't remember what it was, I will ask him next time I go.

Thanks Rachael.

I will do that. Being a regular with a chiropractor with her leg issue, I will ask her about this.

Thanks so much. I really don't think I am going to give her this drug. I am reading to many nightmares about it. I would rather wash her bedding everyday than to lose her to a drug.

My Bailey started taking Proin when she was about 6 or 7 for urinary incontinence. Vet said it's common in middle-aged spayed females. She was prescribed the 25 mg pill, I believe, and the vet said to keep trying smaller and smaller amounts until she no longer "leaked". The whole pill made her too hyper, but we finally found the right balance with just less than a quarter of a pill per day. After she had been on it for a few days with success at that small amount, I reduced her to that amount just every other day, and so on. She had no side effects from it that I saw. She would look so embarrassed when she'd get up and have a "puddle" underneath her, so I kept her on it, and found she could go for about 4 days without a piece of the pill once the leaking was under control. She ate the little piece along with her kibble and it never bothered her.

Thanks for the feedback. I am glad to hear that you had success with this product.

I has used this drug for years in dogs. Only one dog had a problem and that was in decrease in appetite. Lower the dose and it went away.

Listed side effects are restlessness, irritability and hypertension. Anorexia maybe a problem, Rare reports of "stroke" have occured.

I do start at a conservative dose twice a day for 7 days and than once a day for 7 days and then every other day for week and if I get to this level I have them stop it. At any point if the incontinance reoccurs I go back to the last successful level. I have quite a few dogs not need in following the short course. I think it was some atonia of bladder neck muscles or surrounding nerves that resolved with the "help".

Thanks Dr. Shelli. I think Chloe is turning me into a neurotic mess :rolleyes2:

My vet prescribed 1/2 of a 25mg pill twice a day for a week. Then, I am to see him to discuss if I see any difference and to adjust the dose.

I guess I shouldn't have reservations about starting it? Sometimes the internet is great, but other times, I am not so sure. We used to just listen to what the vet prescribes and follow it. Now....I researched the drug and got all sorts of horror stories.

Happy was on it for the last couple years- worked pretty well until just before the end.

My chiropractor said that it could be a adjustment issue- just never had the chance to try that route.
