Pup still has puppy teeth at 7 months!

My girl is 7 months old now and still has her upper puppy canines firmly in place.

I have tried tug of war, wiggling them, bones, but they are stuck. The adult ones are pretty much all the way through now.

Should I wait longer in the hope they will fall out or just schedule an operation at the vet (which I am trying to avoid)

Thanks for any help.

I had the same thing happen with Keiran. In his case the adults were growing on top of the puppy upper canines. (Think in layers... puppy canines bottom layer, adult canines top layer.) Like with you the puppy canines stayed solid no matter what we did - chews, tug, etc.

I strongly suggest you get him to the vet, have them look at her and schedule time for an extraction of the puppy teeth. I did this at 6 months because of the way the adults were growing. DO NOT allow the vet to tell you to wait longer. If you wait much longer there can be bite problems because the adults don't grow in properly.

Check with your vet or your breeder. Just because he's 7 months doesn't mean they definitely need to be pulled--it all depends on how the adults are growing in. Enzo hung onto his for a long time, but our breeder/friend and the vet weren't concerned. Sure enough, they came out a few days later (despite not being loose up to that point!) and it wasn't an issue.

When I took Cleo to the vet to have her spayed, they told me she still had a baby tooth in there. They asked if I wanted them to pull it as the adult tooth had already come in and the baby would most likely never come out and this could affect her jaw. So they did and she was fine. I recommend having the vet pull them as this situation can cause pressure on her teeth. It is more important as it is her upper canines and can cause bite problems as Silaria said. Call the vet and have them take a look. Good luck!
