Puppy Eye Discharge

Hi all,

I'm new here, but figured I'd post this here, because seems like we have a ton of members who have a lot of sheltie puppy knowledge!

My 3 month, little Charlie, has a clear eye discharge. Kind of looks like his under his eye is a tad wet. I brought him to the vet, and she gave me this medicated eye drop, hasn't made any difference, and he has gotten it now for about 2 weeks.

Has anybody else had this experience with their pup? I'm not sure what to do for him, but it doesn't seem to be bothering him. (No redness, he never seems to bother with the area either!)

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Katie :-)

What I would do is see a vet ophthalmologist to make sure there are no physical issues. IF there are no issues, I would use a coette cotton pad with saline eye wash (not contact lens solution) to wipe that area once a day. I used to show Persians and that kept the eye area clean, stain free, and prevented infections with a little bit of disinfecting action. Eye wipes and the water additives for tearing are not good things. However, see a vet eye specialist first.

I agree that I'd see a vet ophthalmologist. There are a few treatable genetic issues that could be manifesting here (not to scare you--could be nothing!), but sometimes it's better to be safe than sorry.

Mine dogs always had runny or gunky eyes when they were young. It was something that cleared up when they reached adulthood, so I just assumed it was a puppy thing.

Thank you, it actually cleared up! Thank goodness! I will keep this advice though if it does come back!
