Puppy & Leash Training

Casey is 13 weeks old. We're trying to train him to the leash but all he really wants to do is chew on it. He walks a few steps, all the while chewing on the leash. Then he will just fall down and roll over, still chewing on the leash. All my other dogs picked up leash training quickly as I just clipped the leash on them and let them run around the yard with the leash on. Casey just wants to chew on it.

Any suggestions?

welcome to puppy life! I suggest instead of just letting it be down with it, I would tie the leash to you. Tie it loosely so pup still picks the way, but not loose enough that the pup can chew it.

Try putting the leash on inside the house so he gets used to the feel of it. Atm it probably feels strange having something tugging at his neck. You can also spray some bitter apple or diluted vinegar on the lead so it tastes yucky.

We had a little sheltie/pom mix that wanted to chew her lead all the time. Our solution was to get a lightweight chain lead until she was used to it and understood what it was for.

My Laddie did that the first time on the leash, but after that, he was fine.
The folks here have some great ideas, I would sure try them.
