Q Coat Wizard

I hear you, and I've been on that page personally for the last 3 years, which is why I've not used my furminator at all. I just can't devote the time to doing a section per night.

I do have a life beyond my dogs, after all.

So, I think I'm going to re-introduce the furminator, document my findings and post to the forum how I think it can be used, if at all.

All I have to say as with everything in life, there are 2 ways the easy way and the correct way. Sure you can use the quick way and get so-so results and if your ok with that than carry on.

So, do tell....what is the correct way? And how long does it take you to brush out each dog and how often do you do it.

Thx

Grayhound comb, or if they arent too bad you can get away with a pin brush, and line brush them. Depending on the coat condition I can completely do one side on a dog that towards the end of coat blow in an hour. The worst coat here to do is Noah, followed by Twinkie. Noah takes me if im serious about combing though and hes showing usually almost 1 hour on each side of just his rear/pants/hips. I can do his trunk of his body in about 30 min or so...he just packs soo much fur on his hip/rear, there is no easy route for removing all that packed in fur. During when they are all shedding and with my work schedule they dont get trimmed because my time is alloted to brushing fur out..I just looked at everyone last night and laughed...even poor Noah looks like a farm dog to me..Everyone will get trimmed this weekend since I am off, and shedding has slowed down slightly!

I took a grooming class last winter that was taught by a professional groomer. I took my 2 yr old blue merle as my project. He said that a furminator should never be used on a Sheltie. He was concerned about damage to guard hairs, even when line brushing. I was taught to use a comb (metal with 2 different tooth spacings) and if needed a mat knife for mats and tangled undercoat. It seems to work well....but does take time. The undercoat really comes out.

I agree with this.

I like raking rather than line combing. It takes me less time and I like it better. When I am showing a dog, I will rake once a week. It promotes hair growth as well as getting rid of all the packed hair. If I'm not showing, it depends on the dog's coat. I can usually get away with once a month when I'm being lazy with my dogs, but the longer you go the more time it will take as there will be more packed hair. I took a Youtube video for some friends of mine and it was 15 minutes long. If you take out the explaining, it didn't take much time. I'd say it took me 10 minutes (and that was for a dog being raked once a week). I'm sure it takes me closer to 15 - 20 minutes if I'm going longer in between raking.

I don't think you should use a furmintor.

This just begs a poll question.....How many minutes/hours do you spend grooming your dogs....honestly! I will post this shortly

Hmmmm....what are your thoughts? Has anyone every tried this or similar? I would be worried.....but Indy has such FAT pants, I despair!

This is what I use.. and I will tell you it is a fabulous tool. If it were not for this little gadget, Trapp would not look like he does right now. It was recommended to me by Dee, from her online grooming seminar.

Do know.. if not used correctly you will end up with a sheltie that looks terrible, and a chopped coat. It is not to be used daily~ I use it only in his pants area. And it has made a world of difference.

I would never ever use a furminator, I do think if used improperly it will ruin a coat. I guess one could take the easy way, or the correct way. I guess it depends on the owner.
I don't know how I could have done without it this summer! Trapp is a changed dog in his looks.
