Questions on serving rabbit

Hi All,

I am wanting some input on serving up rabbits to my dogs. I will either need to find a supplier for the rabbits or breed them myself. But I was wondering just how to feed them to my pups.

Would I try to get whole rabbits - skinned with organs and guts and have them cut into quarters by a butcher and add fish and chicken and some beef to the rabbit meals?

Any insight is appreciated!
 
I haven't fed rabbit, but my landlady has. She just buys them skinned and feeds them straight. The only rabbit I have access to is frozen meat in a box, at $5 per pound. :(
 
same here, comes in the freezer section...

sounds like too much work raising them, and I hate slaughtering them, although I grew up with that on a German farm...
We used to have them where I was growing up... My Family still breeds them for... can you guess it?? Conformation, LOL

I fed rabbit that I got from the butchers. It came frozen. Romeo did not like it. Thank goodness for that coz it cost me $40 for one rabbit!! I had a hard time hunting one down (no pun intended!) and my dad actually suggested going to the petstore and buying one. I think he was joking but I gave him a dirty look anyway!!

I just thawed the thing, chopped it up and fed it raw. It came mostly gutted but the heart was still there (someone forgot something?!). As it is a new meat, you might want to feed just a bit of it first with other familiar meats, and then more at the next meal.
 
I feed rabbit to my two. Not too often unfortunately, as it is so expensive here. But mine love it. Plus, the bones are small enough that they can eat them.

If you can get the whole rabbit, with all organs, that is great! That would be the 'perfect' balaced meal for them. It would be too much to feed in one meal, but over a few days it would be excellent. You do not have to add anything else to it, like chicken or anything. The whole rabbit, because of the organs, bones and muscle would be a correctly balanced meal. Having said that, I would not feed them only rabbit all the time. They do need to get different sources of food to get various nutrients. And don't worry about balancig each meal. Balance should be attained over several meals.
 
Well I can tell you my dogs like their rabbit whole! They just pick up fresh (dead) ones from the ground and chomp away - its so revolting, I have the darndest time trying to get them to give it up. Mr D in particular just loves to chomp on a fresh rabbit. So I guess from a dog's perspective give it as whole as possible - I would remove the innards here though, with the diseases going around the rabbit populations in Australia I dont think I want them eating rabbit offal.
 
I believe, whole is better too. I am having issues with Maia eating things 'whole' however. It just took her over 1/2 hr to eat most of a chick. Chinook stood around, scavenging for the what she did not want. He has no problems eating things whole. I wish she wouldn't have issues either. It is so good for them to eat like that - revolting to watch, but good for them.

Toffee has not been eating his chicken lately, and snubs fish... now Beef he likes in ALL forms... grrr.. betcha he would snub the rabbit!
