Rally Advanced - Training Question

There are 180 degree pivots in Rally too. If they aren't there now, they are coming with the rule changes in April.

Has anyone tried "Brick Work"? One of the members of my club used it for her dog with a lot of success. (Her "get in"s are fantastic!) If you go to YouTube and search for Celeste Meade, Brick Work "Get In", Part 1 you will find a few videos on it. (Sorry, I can't post a direct link. I'm at work and YouTube is blocked.)

Yes, there have always been 180s at the advanced level. Work on the 90s and then it's a quick step to the 180s. Anything you can do to develop rear end awareness is beneficial. There are many techniques. I never did any of them with Lexi, though and her pivots are amazing!! She watches my shoulder. I noticed quite a while ago when she was always going too far around that I was twisting too far to see where she was. Because she was watching my shoulder, that was causing her to go too far.

Keep working....it will happen.

yeah, we know that. It is perch work. We learned from "Heeling is just another trick" DVD by Silvia Trkman. Now my question is how to move it to sit -turn -sit?

Edan's usually very in tune with how I move. When it sits too far behind me it's usually because I'm pushing my left shoulder back (so I can look at where he is).

I'm definitely not trying to rush him through learning this, even though he is a very quick learner. I tried the block method a little bit yesterday, limiting it to him just getting on the block and he had that part figured out in about 3 minutes. Tonight will work on trying to get him to take a step or two.

The funny thing was what CJ did while we were working. CJ isn't a puzzler like Edan is but she really wanted the Cheerios he was getting. Next thing I know, she's got HER two front paws on the block! She figured out, all on her own, how Edan was getting Cheerios. We rewarded her with Cheerios also because we've been trying to teach her to problem solve a little more than the normally does.

Since my dogs know sit and get in by that point, I just start them in a sit, tell the dog Get in and then tell them to sit. Fade the command after the behavior is about 70%. Doesn't take long.

In obedience, you always want them to sit after a pivot unless a command or singal is given for them to remain standing(never done in obedience), retrieve or heel with you(not in obedience only rally, the heel signal can just be moving).

The brickwork method by Celeste is what I used to teach Davina pivots and am currently teaching Rush (puppy) since I wasn't fond of my previous techniques. I love this method as the dogs learn it quickly and it's so easy. All of mine thoroughly enjoy performing this exercise. Besides the 3 steps back up, pivoting ranks second.

ok, got it. Does it have to be together turn or handler first and then dog? We did separate just fine, am not sure how to do it together yet. I have no cues, just positional behavior.

Yep the dog and handler need to move together. I just tell the dog what to do. Movement cues can be the cues or vocal cues if they know it.

First, that Meade video is absolutely amazing! Wow.

Second, Sheri, didn't you guys do things like that in agility? I know we did perchwork for rear-end awareness (can you tell I didn't work on it much?). But dang, nothing like the Meade video. Sheehs.

And lastly, I am so stealing Justice. Period!

I have work to do. MAybe this will help us with agility.
