Randy's urine has operculated objects in it

Got copies of Randy's UA results from yesterday. He has several operculated objects in his urine. I looked operculated up and it appears to be a covering over something. Further research leads me to believe he could have some type of worm in his urine. Anyone familiar with operculated objects? I also read where it is described as the covering on fish gills. Well, Randy is eating Fromm WHitefish and Potato. Maybe that has something to do with the objects. Guess I'll have to wait until the vet gets the results.

Ok, talk of fish gills and fish diet when discussing an operculated egg is forcing me out of lurkdom, as those are blind alleys in this situation...

Operculated means that an egg has a 'button' on the end, or both ends, of it, giving it a very distinct appearance. The classic operculated egg in the dog is the whipworm, but this does not appear in urine.

Finding an operculated egg in urine, presumably these 'odd things' which you refer to in the other thread, generally means capillaria - unusual in cats and very unusual in dogs. I would suggest that you ask your veterinarian about that and look in that direction. - Dr. Mac

Welcome back to the light, Dr. Mac -- sure have missed you! That was great information -- I never knew that about whipworm eggs. Hanks!

"Operculated" goes in the same vocabulary category as "bifurcate". Probably not for in general conversation, but occasionally useful.

If this was not a clean sample, is it more likely these objects are contaminates?

Dr. Mac--Randy did in fact have capillaria in his urine last October. Vet said he probably got them from eating earthworm eggs in dirt. Maybe he never got rid of them. My vet had the receptionist call me Friday and she didn't know much. He took some medicine, but right now I can't recall the name of it. How can we get rid of the worms for good. They called them Lung Worms.

I think its a simple communication issue.

The way they would have diagnosed capillaria in the urine last december almost certainly was by finding those very same odd operculated eggs in the urine. So, basically, your pet either got it again or never really entirely got rid of it.

As your veterinarian properly diagnosed it last December they are aware of the situation and can work with you to either complete elimination or watch for and deal with reinfestation. - Dr. Mac

Latest results from Randy's UA are normal. These results were run by Antech Labs. Nothing noted about operculated objects. Same batch of urine as my vet clinic had. Go figure.

At least we now have greatly improved vocabularies! Impress your friends!

But I'm glad Randy is egg-free!:wink2:
