Rawhide = bloody gums

I just got some large rawhide bones today to help with F-kap's teeth. But he's chewing them so intensely that the edges cut into his gums. I'm wondering if I should soften them up in water. Would it still help clean his teeth soggy? I just don't know what would be best, putting it in water or taking it away and just not risking it hurting him.
 
We take them away when there is a little blood and give them a few days off. A cloth or rubber chew toy should fill the void until the gums settle down a bit. Other than puppy teething, we saw the blood more frequently with older dogs.
 
I take away when bleeding and give it back the next day. For some reason though, mine LOVE wash clothes. It works for us though because they're wash clothes my fiance's aunt decided we "had" to have :dead:. If it's hard, you might want to try and soften it a little.
 
The bleeding happens because the dog has gum disease. It's like when you go to the dentist to get your teeth cleaned and your gums bleed. The less you floss regularly, the more your gums bleed. It's not necessarily a horrible thing, but you should floss more often to avoid it--same is true with dogs.

The chewing on the rawhide should help, but in the meantime you'll see a lot of bleeding.
