apparently at some point dog learned that "stay" means stand up and bounce around (i didn't teach him this!). i can have him sit or down for extended periods of time, but the second i give the verbal "stay" command he's up and bouncing. how can i retrain the meaning of this word to him? i want to use "stay" and "wait" as two different commands. i guess i could come up with a different verbal... any suggestions? thanks.

Thanks.

My agility instructor actually told us that she doesn't any "stay" command! she said that "sit" means sit until i tell you something else, "down" means down until you something else, etc...

I might also just use a different word! we're just working on extending out sit and down times right now... lol.

Thanks again for your input!!!

Yeah, my Instructor also doesn't use stay either...
But it really does sound like your wait queue is now poisoned, lol. I agree with if you want a verbal queue you may as well use another word now

yeah, ditto to what Toffee's Mom said.
Sit, down and stand are stationary commands, once dog in dog should stay there until released. Crate Games are so helpful to get excellent understanding of it. I used to have quite a struggle and now it is pure joy.
Try teaching Stand substitute on top of some table or something elevated.

I use Stay when I want the dogs to freeze wherever they are. I don't care if they are sitting, standing or lying done.

I think a command like "stay" is critical for being able to control potential life-threatening situations, or a situation where you need absolute control.

You can call it "wait" or "freeze" if you want, but I think its different from "sit" or "down". I use sit or down when I want my dogs to work for something. It's very different.

I don't use a stay or wait command either - sit means sit, stand means stand, down means down...until I give the next command. As an emergency command, I use a drop signal - they hit the ground wherever they are and stay there.

I think I may learn how to speak Scottish and give Koji all new commands. So feel your pain.

I would also suggest a new word or to reinforce that a sit means to stay there until I release you. Which it should mean anyways. Now that I think about it, I don't tell Koji to sit when I do agility. Maybe I need to. Huh. Anyhow...good luck. Reteaching it shouldn't be a problem, but you may need a new word.
