Refusing to pee

Our 8month old pupppy Selma has been really easy to housebreak except for one small thing. From she was a little puppy we made a fenced in yard for her (a temporary one) so that we could let her walk around without worrying that she'd take off down to the road. When lifted over the small fence and into her yard she'll do her business, but the problem is... when she doesnt have her lil yyard she wont pee.

We can go on long daytrips with the car to visit family and she refuses to pee until we get back home (as long as 8+ hours) Has anyone else had this same problem? if so how did you solve it?

Recently she has gotten a little better when we're out for walks, but we still go :eek2: selma actually peed! when it happens. and then we praise her and give her a treat.

when Gavin was a pup, he was trained to go on grass. When he was 6 months old, we went travelling. All was good until Arizona, when he couldn't even find a weed to pee on! Poor guy was so happy we found a McDonalds with a lawn! Even now, he has to find a weed or shrub to pee on if there isn't grass (He has to be REALLY desperate to go on dirt or rocks). Mind you, peeing over another dog's pee is a completely different issue and dirt is fine for that :D

No solution, but just letting you know it is normal for a dog to have pretty strict potty preferences.

My boys do that, too! Except once in a great while, Claussen will be peeing, and gradually hop on three legs over to the sidewalk and continue pering until he's standing in a puddle (he holds it in alllll dayyy long in hopes that he'll get to spread it out over a walk).

As for a solution, what happens when you take away the gate in the yard? Maybe it's her smell that she's used to? When you take her for a walk what happens? I would try always acknowledge her going with a word, so that she will begin to associate the word with the action and eventually learn to go when you ask-where you ask. You could also try catching some if her urine and dumping it in other areas to spread her smell and see what happens. Good luck!

It seems to have nothing to do with her smell. Mom took away the gate a while ago, and she has slowly started to go in the same area, but in the beginning mom had to lift her and let her down. smehow that seemed to trigger it. When we went for weekend visits to my sister we took the portable fences with us and shed go at once, but without it she had to be real desperate... or shed pee inside (that hasnt happened in a long while though)

we have two other dogs (boys) and they go all the time Lol maybe we expect her to go more often because of that.

Shes gotten more interested in smells outside, but shows no interest in actually marking anything herself. Mom worries that its not heatlhy for her to hold it in for so long.

So weird. Moms had dogs since she was 14 and shes never ever had this problem before

Honestly, I think you just have to wait it out.

I have a dog that didn't like to pee in anyone else's yard. Even to this day both of my dogs will hold it longer when traveling. But, they eventually get desperate enough (we travel a lot with them) that they just go when/where they can.

I would take her out to different places in the yard, don't let her always go back to the place where she likes to go. If she does go, big party and treats. If she doesn't, I'd go back to housebreaking 101. Keep a close eye on her. Any potential sniffing/pre-peeing behavior, she goes back out to a different spot (not in the place she likes to go).

you solve it by getting up every morning, taking your dog on leash around your hood/ not in your yard/, run a bit if dog slow to eliminate and throw a party when dog does it. First time it will take you probably 40 minutes, by the end of the week you will be under 20 minutes etc. Teaching dog to go on leash or on different surfaces is just another part of training.

Deska did this as well. He would cry and cry on walks until I got him to our place so he could pee, he just would not do it anywhere else. That all changed when Tully came along, she had no probs peeing anywhere and he started marking her piddle.

I figured he just didn't know he was allowed to toilet elsewhere. So just keep up the praise and eventually she will work it out. Alternatively you cuold try walking her with another dog (pref another female) and let her see that piddling outside is okay. Dogs learn so much better off other dogs.
