Registered dog but no records?

Hello! I joined because of this very reason. In 1991, my parents got a sheltie pup from a breeder in Kansas. Since his parents were registered with the AKC and showed (not sure which one), my mom was instructed to register him as well. His registered name was King Cass A Nova or some form of that. My mom can't remember if there was a period after the 'A'. However, there seems to be no record of him.

I'm 23 years old now, born the year after they bought him. He was the first and only dog I have ever had. My love for him knows no bounds even after more than a decade of losing him. Due to my parents' (ugly) divorce, I was unable to be there during his last couple of years. I feel guilty in a way so I'm wanting to seek some closure to it all in the form of just seeing his siblings or parents, or seeing how successful his line was. Sadly, my mom cannot find his papers or remember the names of his parents. He was never showed so there isn't anything recorded anywhere that could include his pedigree other than the registries official records.

Now, I cannot be 100% sure he is registered in the AKC because my mom can't quite remember (despite swearing it was the AKC). When I went onto the AKC online pedigree search, neither versions of his name turned up anything. Is there a possibility that my mom is lying? Does the online pedigree search even go back that far to 1991?

I'm really just wanting to connect to my dog in this small way.

I'm not an expert in pedigrees but without knowing the exact registered name, I imagine it will be incredibly difficult to find out much about your dog's family.
I'm not sure where you are searching for online pedigrees on the AKC site but I would imagine that their pedigree database goes back farther than 1991.
what you really need to know is the name of the breeder or the kennel name of that breeder- that would make it much easier to find out about relatives of your dog.

You have to have the registered name down the last space correct in order for the search to work.

And yes, everybody lies (or more likely can't remember 23 years later).

I would check the ASSA website and see if there is a breeder referral for Kansas- maybe a current breeder could help you find the old breeder.
