ringworm

sheltie just diagnosed with ringworm. ugh. vet prescribed medicated shampoo every day for up to a month. he didn't want to shave the dog since he said the dog looks so pretty and his coat may not come back fully if he shaves it all off. the dog also has the "correct" sheltie coat - meaning it is impossible to soak him down to the skin to get the shampoo all the way down there! i have to wash him every day and it is a nightmare trying to soak him all the way down...

anyone else ever have to deal with this? encouragement or advice?

how do i keep him from catching this ever again? :(

Dont they use fulvicin for ringworm anymore? Years ago I bought a persian kitten that had ringworm, and the vet gave me fulvicin and medicated shampoo for her. I would think something taken internally would help better.

he's taking pills internally and getting topical treatment, both. hopefully that will help clear it up quicker (?)

the good thing is, after day 4, we've gotten into a routine and i feel less depressed about it.

he's on ketoconazole right now. vet said there are other drugs to treat it, but they are significantly more expensive and i guess the effectiveness isn't tremendously better.

has anyone found a way to reduce the likelihood of a ringworm infection? if at all possible, i want to take preventative measures in the future...:fl

I think the most important thing is to wash your hands/arms really good after handling your dog, especially bathing him. Definitely use gloves. But I think since you're applying the shampoo everyday, that's probably helping YOU keep it away. Also, make sure you wash the towel you use to dry your dog off immediately after you're done using it, because that is one very easy way to spread it. You also might want to stay away from linens or blankets your dog lays on. And don't let him sleep in the bed :wink2:.
