I adopted a "free" 18-mo. female sheltie, no questions asked. The owner said they were the 2nd family, the 1st having 5 kids under 9. They said she was too aggressive with the grandkids. She has apparently spent a lot of time in a crate and doesn't know how to play. She rolls over on her back and play bites her feet. When I try to play with her she ignores the toys or ball and trys to play bite my hands, growling. She also is trying to play with the cats (who aren't having it). I want her to learn what my previous shelties just naturally loved--to chase balls or toys and bring them back. I have an ankle injury, and can't run to encourage her to chase. I think if she saw another dog chasing and retrieving, she would see what fun it is. She is very sweet and I can't imagine her harming children, but she cringes (not as much as at first) if you raise your arm as if she's been hit. She's very smart (of course, she's a sheltie) and it didn't take her long to learn the cats are part of the family. I don't think she had ever been around cats. I would love to find a sheltie near baton rouge for a play date.

I am in Covington & have 4 shelties. None of them really chase things but one of the shelties I rescued now lives in Abita Springs & loves to chase balls. There usually is a reason a dog is "free" & it sounds like no one has taken the time to nurture her. Sounds like she views you as another dog & is trying to play with you like she would a dog. there is a dog club (agility) in Baton Rouge- if you are ok with other types of dogs for playdates. plus you could ask about classes and stuff like that.

We adopted a six year old a year ago and he doesn't really play with anything. He chews on Nylabone and has played little with a rope but doesn't play like our others do with all the toys. One of ours we adopted two years ago at age four only plays with soccer ball. They are all so different but Rose may need another sheltie or she may just need time to decide what she likes. I wouldn't worry about it too much. We have three and they are all very different.

some shelties don't like retrieval games...they like tug of war, they like hide and seek, or anything that involves chase (herding). Mine love the kyjen tail teaser...basically it is a squeaky toy on a fishing type pole you can sit and bounce around and they chase it. You could easily fashion something similar, it can be dangled over her, and she can bite at it. Mine love hand puppets, it is interactive and keeps their attention, and you can teach playing.
