What is the safest heartworm medicine for a sheltie? I read all these forums and am afraid to give our Prince anything because they may cause seizures and other side effects. What are the safest brands? Thanks.
You'll see many recommendations on here. The best course of action is to test your boy for the MDR gene and find out if he's mutant or normal or a combination of the two. You can order the test online for free, and pay when you send it in. It's a simple cheek swab.
Most Shelties can take Heartguard. Even if they're mutant/normal there's so little ivermectin in it that it doesn't affect them. I'm not sure I would give it to a dog that's mutant/mutant though That's where the test is helpful. It's done at Washington State University. Here's the link. http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts-vcpl/test.aspx
If you have a dog who can't take Heartguard, there are other choices. I use Sentinel for my dogs who are sensitive. It treats heartworm, other worms and fleas.
