SO, Gabe will be two next year and is a very social sheltie. Very much the opposite of most :wink2: but I want an honest opinion. Would getting a little bro or sister help withGabe being lonely?...

puppy mates

Here is my two cents...I have always had one dog at a time. This was my first experience with two lil monsters at once. Everyone said since it is just me in this season of my journey, that my dog would benefit from having a sibling. But it has to be the right one. Kaleigh & Savannah are equally yoked, so to speak. They bring out the best and the worst in each other as most sibling relationships tend to do:lol: While it is 2X the everything, I think it has ultimately been a good thing. They have each other when I am busy doing other stuff so they don't need me as a playmate. They keep each other entertained, and they can play doggie games which they seem to really enjoy. It was hard at first on Kaleigh but once she realized the benefit, she adapted, ha..and now they are best buds. Many cautioned me that two girls were asking for trouble, well, I don't see any issues with the combo, but they are spayed so that competition element is eliminated.

So if you can handle 2X the everything, and you make sure they like each other, I think it is positive. And really I am seriously wanting m-o-r-e, ha..

I would love, love, love to get a second Sheltie. However, the complex I live in has a rule that you can only have two pets. We have Oberon and Casanova-the-cat, so can't have another. That doesn't stop me from dreaming, or from getting hubby to agree that if and when we move to a place where we can have another, that we will.

I think Oberon would love to have a doggie playmate/sibling. Whenever we go out of town we leave him with someone who has 3 or 4 dogs and who watches a couple more. This last time, one of her dogs had a litter that was 8 weeks old. Oberon was in heaven herding all the puppies.

My Shelties would be happy if they were the only dog in the house. But, since Shelties are like potato chips, I have 4, plus a rough collie.

We had a recent discussion about this, and most people based their decisions on individual situations. ie. temperament of your current dog, any training you need to work on with your current dog, does time allow for you to have another pup?

Here is the thread for you to read over :)

I think once you have more than one, the temptation to ADD to the pack increases, because you realize all control is gone anyway, they OWN you, now...I never thought of multiples, but now, I think it would be ok, and I am seriously thinking how to achieve adding one in the near future...I have succumbed to sheltie addiction as not abnormal but necessity for maximum fulfillment in life,

tesslynn you are absolutely right, that is precisely why I could not think me more than my Minnie :biggrin2:

Hey Cowgirl!

I'm a bit new here, but wanted to give you my 2 cents because I was in a similar situation not too long ago.

In short, before you think about whether getting another Sheltie will help keep Gabe entertained and fight away loneliness, think about if you (and your family if you live under the same household) can really handle it.

The thought of adding to the family of Shelties can be very tempting, I know, but it's much easier and better to study the whole situation and say NO because of reason than to go with emotion and say YES only to regret that decision later, once you realize it's just too much for you to handle.

The latter comes with a lot of repercussions, especially if the two dogs develop a bond!

Just my 2 cents :)

I have two Shelties. Indy is 7 and Callan who 18+ months old.

When I found out that my breeder had another litter in the spring, I was very tempted to bring home number 3. I finally talked myself out of it. Why? Because Callan, even at 18 months is still a brat, and still requires attention and training. I just did not enough cycles to finish Callan's training and start on a new one.

So I decided to hold off for another year. Maybe next spring/summer.

It really depends on you and your current dog. Puppies are sure cute, but a lot of work. And I'm still working with mine (even no longer a puppy).
