Seizure Medications

I'm so sorry you and Dakota are dealing with seizures. Our story follows.
Spencer, my four year old sable boy, had his first seizure (Grand Mal) when he was 2-1/2 years old. There was no pattern to his seizures - six days apart, ten days apart, seven...etc and I never could figure out what triggered them. We started him on Kbr but it didn't seem to have much of an impact so we added PB. This combo at least helped and the seizures were more spread out. Then in Nov. of 2008, he clustered and I couldn't break the cluster with rectal Valium. Over a period of a couple of weeks, he ended up hospitalized a few times trying to get things under control. We had added Zonisimide right before his cluster event but that takes time to work. I started feeding him Wellness Core kibble which is grain and preservative-free. He went from mid-December of 2008 until February 2010 seizure-free. He had a brief seizure mid-February this year. In fact if I hadn't been in the room with him at the time I wouldn't have known it happened since his post-seizure behavior wasn't present. He had another seizure this week. This one was a typical Grand Mal and it was followed by over an hour of pacing. I'm holding off contacting his Vet and/or the Neuro for now. The combination of Kbr, PB and Z worked. When and if he does seize again, we'll have to figure out what med adjustments he might need. I know we've been very lucky since his energy level is as high as before all the meds, once his post-seizure behavior was over, he immediately becomes his usual self and of course we did have 14 glorious months with no seizure activity at all.
Do I wish I had gone the route Ann did with Pixie? I think if I had even been aware of it when the seizures started, I would have looked into it.
I hope that the Kbr does the job for Dakota. I don't have any experience with the other two meds/supplements you mentioned.
It's a difficult thing to see your dog going through a seizure. I found the web site for the Epi Guardian Angels very helpful.

They can be weaned off but must be done very very slowly and if you miss a couple doses seizures may happen. Thanks for the info.

I am so sorry to hear Dakota is having problems. Hopefully the meds improve his condition.
