my first thought when Leo started showing signs of lunging at unfamiliar dogs around 6 months old was to make sure that Leo reads dogs well and being read well. Leo went after big dogs mostly...
So we went to private consult with behaviorist, introduced Leo to number of dogs and yes, he reads them well and they read him well. Leo is pushy sometimes overconfident puppy, maybe not as bad as bully lab in the clip, but close. I wish this clip was made when I was looking to learn more about calming signals, there is so little really good videos showing it exact. I have last edition of Turid Rugaas book which this blogger mentions, it is better copy because has lots of photos as opposed to older books with hand drawn pics. I also have noted that Che, forever diplomat was using lots of calming signals when they both were playing with other dogs.
Sometimes I use them myself when I expect situation might get charged, I start licking my lips, avert my eyes, yawn. I tried to start sniffing just to see what my dogs will do but they looked at me funny
Anyway, reinforcement builds behavior. Reinforce what you want your dog to do/ behave. It is subtle but it is there.
