my sheltie pup poops and pee in her create :(

I wake up early at 4am, to find she eliminated in her crate.
This is what I normally do, wake up at 4am, let her out (but find she already went).
7am - she eats, but doesn't eliminate right after as mentioned by other articles I've read
10am - let her out again, but doesn't eliminate
11am - let her out and she eliminates
12pm - feed her
2pm - let her out, she doesn't go
3pm - let her out and she eliminates
5pm - let her out, she doesn't go
7pm - feed her
8pm - let her out and she eliminates
10 - let her out, she doesn't go
11pm - she doesn't go
12am - she doesn't go
1am - she doesn't go

What should I do? The funny thing is at 4am this morning, when I was about to let her out, she peed in her crate in front of me. I didn't catch her on time.

She probably goes right when I'm knocked out and sleep.

She needs time to figure out that outside is the place to go... A young puppy like that should be peeing every couple of hours. You need to stay outside longer... wait until she DOES pee... then praise her like crazy and come back inside. If you have to be out there for 20 mins, then so be it. Also... try to get her running a bit... the more active she is... the more she'll be likely to need to pee.

You're walking a very dangerous path right now... It's not natural for them to pee/poop in their "dens" (crates)... she's a very confused puppy and if you don't get her on the right path, you could end up with a really long problem of ever having her 100% house-trained.

Take her out every 1.5 hours or so... we followed a schedule like that and Miko was house-trained in no time. The schedule looked something like this...

Go outside and wait until elimination
30 - 45 mins of playtime running free in the kitchen
30 - 45 mins of naptime in crate
Back outside to eliminate

We also carried him from his crate to the grass outside where he was supposed to go. That avoided any accidents in the house. The fewer accidents you have inside, the faster she will always be going outside.

Good luck.

I think I did pretty well teaching Vash to potty outside.

My schedule ran like this:

15 min after every meal take the pup outside and wait until he/she potty's before coming back in.

Immediately after play take the pup outside and wait until he/she potty's before coming back in.

When the pup wakes up from a nap, immediately take him/her out and wait to potty.

And of course if you leave them for any amount of time alone you should take them out asap.

On top of that every hour I would take the pup out to potty when he was real young and just wait for him to do his buisness. It was frustrating at times because all pups at that age want to do is explore not potty.

As for the potty in the crate thing, that either means the crate is too big (if you have a divider use it), the pup already learned to potty in the crate, or you left the pup in the crate too long.

Also How big is her crate, as a puppy it should be a very very snug fit, with basically just enough room in it for her to stand up and turn around in any larger is too much. She shouldn't have enough room to pee or poop somewhere in the crate and not almost be right on top of it. If its to large make it smaller by using a divider panel. My 8 wk old is in a 30X18 inch crate right now but she only has a 12 X 18 inch space to use right now and even that is a bit large I rollup a small blanket to make it even a bit tighter so it's more like 12X12.

Jerros Pretty much Nailed our schedule & routine.

We use a Puppy play pen during the day,(Shear Heaven Believe Me) & its a must Have Item in my opinion an X-Pen set up is a 4X4 ' square to provide her with a safe space and as a place to put her when everyone is in need of a break during the day dog & people alike , she has toys and a small donut & blankey in there and is still under supervision even when in that, but most of the time she's is out & about.

As Mentioned go out with her , make sure she is going, and praise like crazy,my new 8wk old pup is already pretty much going on command when you take her outside, after only a week at home and has gone to the door a couple of times on her own now. but this is our 8th puppy so we pretty much have it down to a science now.

If you are feeding her at 7 and she having a poo before 8 that OK a bit long for my guys they usually go maybe 20 min after eating, but she should probably be having a Piddle before bed no dought.

So right now I take her out to pee on the peeing pad, not outside yet as the vet said she cannot be outside on the floor. Should her peeing spot be far away?

Her crate is 30x18, and I'm using half of it right now. I'll make it a bit smaller again to see what will happen.

Is it bad to always take it out? I don't know if that will confuse her.

Nope They really do like tight cosy spaces, covering the crate with a blanket
is good too if you dont already, kinda make it like a little dark hole.

I have never used a pee pad as mine always go outside, but I would imaging you would not want it right close to where her crate is either.

not outside yet as the vet said she cannot be outside on the floor.

This seems a bit odd to me, if she has had her first set of shots & I could take her to a spot in my own yard or outside to a place that I know has not been crawling with other dogs , I would Not be taking her out to Petsmart or to puppy class yet or even to visit family, till she has had round two of her shots, but I would take her out on my patio or into my dog run without a second thought, even though my other dogs use it because I know they are clean healthy & vaccinated. My pup has been going outside all week in light snow & 6 degree temps, but it s a quick in & out she's not staying out for 15 min maybe 5 or 6 and always accompanied. she is usually shivering a bit when she get in but nothing a quick snuggle doesn't make dissapear in a minute or so, Makes for good Bonding Too :).

I just noticed in your other posts that you are in an apartment that does make things much more difficult, any balcony that is safe??? IF I had that I might try the grass pad approach on the balcony.

oh no..I've taken her to Petsmart..but I do hold her though, and not put her down. I always hold her. Her next round of shots will be next Wed, I think maybe the second shot I can take her out more? Is it because she will get sick? I commute back to my mother's home on weekends, will that be ok?

As for the 4AM pee..
maybe you could try limiting her water after a certain time,
maybe 2-3 hours before bedtime?

After reading thru twice your schedule, this is what I would do.Now granted I don't know how old your pup is,but I see you are feeding 3x a day.

I slowly transitioned my pups from 3 meals to 2 meals at about 4-5 months.I don't know exactly, but I know by the time they were 5 months,,we were doing 2 meals.

I would back up the supper meal to much earlier if you can. Getting 3 meals a day,and one so late,it is likely she will be pooing in her crate, cause what goes in..must come out.

The lunch time snack could be something light, maybe a treat of carrots,or possibly some healthy treat of sorts.

feeding at 7am-4 or 5 pm,and no later I would think help her time wise to poop for the last time of the day,no later than 8pm.That way her system gets in a routine to poop before going in the crate for the night.

As far as peeing..well since the crate is already soiled, the pup is going to eliminate, cause he has to go.

Apartment living I am sure is tough on any dog,I don't think personally, with this breed I would do it,but that is my personal thought. They just need so much excersise.

Another thought I had, since you are feeding 3 meals, the amount of food,or type of food, everything plays a factor.
