Shedding outer coat continuously?

I've had Ida, my rescue Sheltie, for about a month and a half now. When I got her I had to clean out all of her winter undercoat, as she had not been groomed properly by her previous owner. Her undercoat has been cleaned out, but ever since I've had her she also continuously sheds her outer coat. Holding her in my lap is like picking up a shedding cat, I have outer coat hairs all over me. I keep brushing her out, but she keeps shedding. My male Collie's coat has never come out like this. Is this normal for a Sheltie, or a Sheltie female? Could her coat be shedding like this because of a change in her diet? (She's on raw now. I imagine her puppy mill owner fed her a low quality dry food).

Hormones are funny things. I presume they spayed her before you got her, and they will drop every hair after anesthesia. So between the hormone change and the surgery, she could well blow every hair, and not all at the same time. But within a couple of months, she will be nekkid.

lots of events

My guess is that she is still settling from many changes...you changed her diet and that does take awhile for her body to become accustom. Kaleigh is 1 1/2 now and I have NEVER had a sheltie coat up like her so fast, and she is still blowing coat. I think it is the crazy weather we have had contributing. I got a furminator brush and man that thing goes after the fur. Never had one before, but it has really helped remove the access on her. I think the downy excess is now gone. But having a sheltie means fur becomes an accessory in your life that you accept and have to manage.:biggrin2: I think in a few mths, Ida will probably adjust to her new life, her new diet, and the fur won't be such an issue.

That's right, she was spayed. Her belly fur is just starting to grow back in. I can see that would be a shock to the system, considering her age (5). Plus there is no telling how many litter she had in those 5 years. I'll just keep brushing and sweeping, and hope that her new coat comes in healthy and pretty in the end. I sure hope she doesn't go all nekkid, though. :(
