Sca and Spitfire are best buds. Usually Sca has to see what he is up to but if Spitfire is gone that is OK. If Spitfire is alone though the world is ending

We have the dysfunctional Sheltie family here. Pixie and Ivy used to be best buds and play together all the time. They were a similar size and had a similar play style so that worked well. They'd chase each other but no one got knocked down.
Enter Barkley, who was to be Pixie's new playmate. At 5 pounds and 9 weeks old, the first thing he did was terrorize Pixie, who took to hiding behind furniture to avoid him. That was 5 years ago and he's still doing it, and she's still hiding.
So Checkers came home. Being Barkley's sister and littermate, we thought surely she would whip him into shape. Wrong. Barkley terrorizes Checkers too -- although Chex will occasionally give him the Elvis lip.
If she and Pixie are alone, they'll play but usually Barkley won't let them. He wants to play boy-style, like a football linebacker.
We've realized that Barkley views the girls as his personal herd and likes to keep them in line. Unfortunately, he does this by body slamming them so no one will play tag with him, sigh. But if we bring in a visiting dog, Barkley wants nothing to do with him! He's a regular little dictator, our Bark!

how did you guess that?! Some days he has the brains of one as wellGenerally though I have to say there is always a constant group of 4 which consists of Noah, Mia (the pb&J),and Six and Tucker...When they do pair off though Tucker will be the first get get lost on his own, Six will than hang with either Mia or Noah and the odd one left over will come find me...so usually its Mia with me. The two older ones are more on the outside of the pack..they'll play...well Sam will play with them but than he grows tired of their antics..after all he is 11...and Molly...Molly wishes they'd all just disappear when she opens her eyes..

ABSOLUTELY!!! Sable aka "Pee Wee" is my oldest and my rescue. She hardly ever plays or interacts. Just sits on the couch and watches. Maggie & Cody used to play constantly till Sadie came into the picture a yr. ago. From that very moment, Sadie & Cody have been "best friends". They're inseparable! Maggie watches then joins in the "wrestling match". It's hilarous to watch. They team up and get Cody down and he LOVES IT!! He just rolls around on the floor with both the girls acting they are beating the crap out of him and he just has a big "sheltie smile" on his face the whole time.
He's also the "peace keeper". When Maggie & Sadie are playing, (Sadie has become the alpha between all 3 girls, which amazes me cause she's the youngest) Cody runs around them with a toy in mouth squeaking it, and the moment either of them decided to "get mad" he steps in and separates them. I should tape it!!

Haha!! Riley agrees. Barkley wanted nothing to do with Riley when they had a get together. Although Riley did get along with Checkers.
I know Riley gravitates to herding dogs of similar size and age as himself. Sheba Inus, puggles, and anything tiny are also favorite buddies. Unfortunately he doesn't seem to have much patience for puppies (never seen a smaller puppy/Sheltie puppy though). I have a feeling a younger male or female buddy will be ideal since he loves loves loves playing with other Shelties.

Beckon and Layla are a duo -- but it's Beckon who seeks Layla out. Big Sis is everything!
Annie will occasionally instigate play with Beckon -- the flirt!
Bitsy Boodle is a duo with her ball!
Oh, I forgot! Beckon and his beloved chicken Little Jane!!! But they're more of a cluck than a clique!

Sam Sounds like Justice and Molly most definitely sounds like Ember. Birch is mister good time Charlie in whatever situation he is in. His sisters beat on him when they get together and he plays with the little puppies so gentlely. He herds them around ,rolls on the ground and lets them climb all over him. Reminds me of the fun uncle at Christmas time.
