So Gavin had coarser fur and didn't mat easily.
Pico has finer fur and mats relatively easily.
I find I need to comb behind the ears everyday!
And he also mats easily under his (reltively loose fitting) collar. I am thinking of taking the collar off everynight.

what do you think?
 
Deacon's hair behind the ears mats; Brodie's does not. Deacon's fur is coarser, Brodie's is not.

Chris Christensen's Butter-comb is amazing. Might think, well a comb is a comb, but there IS a difference with this comb. I also use Clubman Pinaud men's grooming powder; smells nice doesn't clump up or get the fur all gross. I was going to suggest talcum powder too, and I love Clubman’s. I don’t keep collars on in the house either for that reason.
 
Meadow's fur is also finer and silky, great for petting, but she gets the worst ear mats of any dog we've had. Not so much a problem under the collar, though. I think if I had that problem, I would remove collar while in the house.
 
Combing Pico's ear mats is not an issue, actually. This guy is such a drama queen he needs the practise sitting still and being combed.
He is getting better, but still.
everytime we go hiking, I go over his feet and that is more practise time. he always picks up sooo much crap (burs, stickers, foxtails, random stuff)
 
I use this comb to do around the ears, it’s a nice fine toothed comb…Blueberry matts up terribly!
I also like to use a small slicker to do the legs and a pin brush (I use the Chris Christensen brushes) on the rest.
Using The Stuff is also great sprayed on them after a bath…it helps to get any matts out.
I never have a collar on my dogs in the house. Tags have been known to get caught and they most certainly create matts!
