Hi All! I have been considering a Rough Collie to work as a mobility assistance dog along side my medical alert Sheltie. I have been extremely fortunate to find that a respectable service dog agency's breeding program includes a wonderful collie breeder who lives less than 10 blocks away from me (but nearly 400km from the service dog agency)! The waiting list for a puppy from this breeder is about a year and in the meantime I would like to prepare my Sheltie for the new addition to our family. I figure that fostering some dogs would provide this opportunity while also helping other dogs find the love and forever homes they deserve.
I had signed up with a nonprofit all breed rescue group that I am no longer comfortable volunteering for due to differences in opinions on training and a high incidence of dog aggression issues. I have been thinking that it may be wiser to just stick with what I know and what my own dog is comfortable with by volunteering to foster for a sheltie specific rescue (I understand that no breeed is free of aggression and that any dog can bite if provoked enough but I do believe that Shelties are less prone to agression than some breeds and aren't as strong as larger breeds). Given my experience with the one all-breed rescue I am shy of volunteering for another rescue group without getting some recommendations first. As such, is there anyone here who has had experience with and could recommend a nonprofit Sheltie rescue that is looking for volunteer fosters in the interior of British Columbia, Canada?
