So today, on our usually hike through the dog park we came across a little teeny schnauzer. So as usually, I ask Iris to sit and stay until the owner and dog gets closer (we were going one way they were going another so we were walking towards each other). I find this is the best way to ensure Iris doesnt foolishly run at the other dog playfully. So as they approach, with the usually greeting " Hello, shes young, excitable, vocal but so very friendly!" Which if this greeting is usually followed by a "my dogs not" or any form of negative response; then we calmly sit and wait while they pass us. Shes gotten VERY good with her call backs, when she does play with dogs she comes right back to mum when I call and will sit and wait while the other dog walks by.

THIS time though, the person with the little schnauzer said "hes usually ok but hes getting old and so he doesnt have as much tolerance for the young whipper snappers as he once did. " So I figured well, might as well give it a try, Iris is a good way bigger than the little fella and if it gets funny then I'll call her back.

So, this is where I become a very proud momma. Her usual habit of when I release her from her sit and wait is usually running because by this time the anticipation of playing with the oncomming dog has grown bigger than herself, BUT when I told her " Ok , Iris, Say Hello, Gently, Gently" she just quietly walked up and they just sniffed and that followed by playing.

I am soooooo proud of my little baby !!!! Shes growing up, usually when I say " Ok say hel-" shes already off playing and barking ... She could sense the schnauzers potential senility and was so gentle with him!!! Shes not rough, but never so calm and quiet.

I know its not much but it made me really happy.:biggrin2::biggrin2::biggrin2:

What do you mean, "it's not much"?! To me it's a huge thing when your pup starts to show that they're becoming aware of the state of those of around them. It shows she's starting to come out of that me-centric phase where it's all about her needs (play, food, whatever). You have every right to be a proud mom! :smile2:

What a big girl Iris is becoming. Diva is just hitting this stage. Like Phebe's mom said it is a big deal when they realize they are not the only ones in the universe.

hahah thanks guys !!! I am so very proud of her, I gave her millions of kisses and treats hehe .. The "its not much" just derives from knowing alot of your dogs at Iris's age were more advanced in the sense of agility and obedience... My little pupperlover is a good girl :) I was on cloud 9 for the rest of our hike ... Screw love sending you there, my dog sends me there haha:lol:

hahah you guys are fantastic, my other friends are like " oooh, so she walked up to a dog without playing ? thats cool.. " non dog people just dont understand:rolleyes2: hahah
