Smudge and Fluff meet Stache - Christmas Edition!

Smudge

Forums Sage
My Dad (also known as Stache and sometimes Mustachio for his handlebar mustache) came home today from South Korea. Sadly, like I feared, he isn't going to be home for very long at all. :(

Anywho Smudge has always had a love/hate relationship with my Dad. My Dad gets annoyed, because he doesn't understand why Fluffy loves to be petted and fawned over, and why Smudge is more selective about who pets him. Smudge is terrified of my Dad. He runs away from him, barks at him if my Dad is down the hall, and just generally doesn't know what to think of him. Can't blame him, really. A person who lives in your house and then disappears for months to a year at a time only to return again? Very odd.

Fluffy doesn't care. As long as she's got a biscuit you've got half (unless she decides to eat it first!).

So I was VERY pleased with Smudge this evening when Dad came home after being gone for six months. He didn't bark, carry on, or act like my Dad was a big deal at all. I'm thrilled. :biggrin2: Hopefully my dragging Smudge to random events and places all the time is starting to finally pay off!

It's hard to work on getting Smudge used to somebody when the person takes off all the time though.

I think Smudge is being very mature about the whole thing. New people can be scary -- especially if they come in and act like they own the place...because they do!

I am glad all went so well when your Dad came home. It is too bad that he will not be home for very long.

When I was a child, we had a collie/german sherpherd cross. Dad would leave Monday mornings and come home Saturday afternoons as he worked for a lumber company and had to be away building cottages. It was easier to stay and get them done in a week than to travel back and forth. Portia would circulate through the house every little while all night during the week. She knew Dad's car, knew it was Dad, but because she was the one on guard duty, until Dad called her by name, he didn't dare get out of the car. I am afraid to think what might have happened. Your dad is lucky your dogs have accepted him back into the family without any problems.

Enjoy your Christmas with your parents and treasure each moment you have with them. Time is too short with them.

I wish mine were more discerning. Any tradesperson that steps into the house is part of the pack within 5mins (although the 5min before that they get the fearless sheltie attack dogs).

Maybe Smudge has grown up and doesnt feel threatened anymore. After all, he is the man of the house when your dad is away.

Dow was everyone friend and WILD but NEVER reach over the fence to pet him. Sca .... well he sits there and looks at you sizing you up for cookie potential. He saves his barks for herding his sheep since he is in charge :rolleyes2: Sounds like Mr Smudge just continues to be a better and better guy, good work Jess.

Jessica, Meggie does not like men with hair on their face. Perhaps it was the mustache that initially put Smudge off. It takes Meggie awhile to get used to someone with a beard or mustache. And don't even think about a hat or dark glasses. She HATES them!
