Smudge the midnight sheltie.

I kind of figured this.

I do have a crate cover for Smudge (well...it is a quilt I decided I didn't like, and I draped it over his crate. It works well enough). However, I don't have the door to the crate blocked. Should I cover the crate door, too? Or most of it anyway, because I want to boy to be able to breathe.

I drape the cover over the whole crate and leave about half of the door end up, so it's not totally blocked. I use a polar fleece blanket in the winter and a light sheet in the summer so you know air can get through. As long as your quilt isn't too heavy you should be OK. The point is to block out as much light and activity as you can.

Be strong, Jessica!! Don't let that pup schmooze you....

I use a little flannel receiving blanket as a crate cover for Meggie, although she's able to go in and out at will. It only covers the sides, but not the door or the other end. She probably spends about 1/3 of the night in her crate; 1/3 on my bed and the last part behind the chair in my room.

I honestly think all you need to do is ignore Mr. Smudge for a night or two. He obviously can hold his bladder all night. If pottying is really the issue I'd go to the dr. as I'd fear a UTI, as others mentioned.

Last night went awesome. :biggrin2: Every time he tried to bark I would say, "Smudge! Don't even start!". He would groan, but that was it. But I am going to give it a few more nights before I announce problem solved.

Good for you, Jessica!! He's a smart boy, he'll figure it out quickly and give up. Score one of the humans!

Thats great news!

I would'nt even bother warning him.Just give him a stern ahh-ahh..he is a smart dog,and he will get the hint.wishing you some restful nights soon~

I gave the shelties a bath this afternoon. Usually, the routine after a bath is even worse than going to sleep. Smudge doesn't even let up on the barking, and I have to listen to it until I let him out after he is dry.

I always ignore him, but he barks the entire time anyway! :rolleyes2:

So I decided to take a blanket and cover all of the crate door except for a small portion at the bottom. Then I walked out and closed the door.

I love the sound of silence. :biggrin2:

glad to hear that silence is returning. I have always covered Cran's crate at night- now time to cover Dixie's too
though I will say she was an angel last night- hope she stays that way

I have always covered Smudge's too. I guess I just never thought to cover the door before! I do leave him a little hole to peep out of at the bottom. Not that it does him much good - it's dark.
