So i got a new sheltie Saturday

well first we had our 14yr old sable girl
than we got bandit last year in September, whiche he's 8 months right now
than last saturday we bought Slate "his father"

i think a few dog walks might help, it would at least get him active.
 
Yes this sounds like a dog that had VERY poor/or no socialization as a puppy. I would be wary buying there(i.e. run the other direction).
He is a beautiful boy for sure, and I am glad to see he will have a good new life with you.
I believe in being the alpha, but I have always shown my dogs much love and affection, I never felt it lowered my status in their eyes, it only demonstrates the love I feel to them.
I will have to tell you, I have purchased dogs that were raised as kennel dogs, and try as I might (with tons of work, time and effort) they did not turn around to how I would have liked. Shelties just have to get that correct start, so much more than other breeds for some reason.

I hope with time and love he will see that he has came into a wonderful new place and things will turn around for you.
 
I, too, am trying to turn around a dog that had very little socialization and was supposed to be with a reputable breeder (not the breeder of the dog, but the person that bought him) He's been here for several weeks and will only sit by me (preferrably UNDER my legs) and puts himself in the tightest ball possible! This is the second that I have had to rehab and the first would have never been able to show as he feels very safe at home but it would take me so long to get him acclimated to a new situation we would have had to camp at the show for the enitre week before LOL

Shelties definately need a great start in life to be all they can be :smile2: It's a shame that this boy was strictly used for stud and not given the love and attention that he deserved. Even my stud dogs are allowed tons of family time and if they try to mark, they wear a belly band. It is very important to me that when prospective buyers come to my home, they are able to interact with my dogs.

Now for treats, try the very unhealthy slim jims. They are greasy and messy but they are smelly and yummy and my dogs LOVE them! We only use them for very special times. I use kitchen scissors and cut them in small pieces before our session begins. Use a plastic baggy in your pocket though!

and Slate finally decided he wasnt going to take anymore of Bandits pestering so he decided to try to bite at him a couple times...this is good cause he's standing up for himself finally.

The breeder i got him from, she's a very good breeder an has a lot of dogs with great personalities that love to love an play.
but Slate is different, Slate was born with a breeder up in Ohio and was given to my breeder, which she's in her 70s and her husband is in his 80s,
There a lil to old for playing with the dogs, which is why she gave us Slate so he can get active an become alive an be a normal dog.

I think it was hard for Slate to leave her cause he would always be by her side everywhere she went. I almost teared up when we took him cause he would look back when we were heading towards the car :cry:
 
They are pretty shelties. I read where an adult sheltie might take up to two months to adjust to their new surroundings.

Slate is gorgeous. Callie was 5 yrs when I got her- had been with a breeder before going to the rescue that I adopted her from. She was pretty insecure when I got her- wouldn't even go into my friend's house when I first got her- no problems there now. she did like her food though- any treats work for her and she tries to herd me to feed her faster. I took her to a training class just to get her out so she could see other dogs/people - not to actually train her there- purely for socialization. Callie is still not much into playing though. Playing Fetch is beneath her. I did find out about some cool toys at a seminar held by our dog training club. It is a pouchlike canvas piece with rope ends that you can put treats inside the pouch and eventually get them to play fetch. I haven't gotten one yet but I need to so Callie can have more fun too. give it time and let Slate move at his own pace.
