Switching to Blue Buffalo for Sandstorm

Hi all,
I have thought about this and decided that I want to try Sandstorm on Blue Buffalo adult Lamb dry food. He is now on Nutro-Natural Lamb and Rice. Blue Buffalo is a higher quality food, but I don't want to try anything richer. The Blue is also the same price, and I am almost sure the store I frequent carries it. Sandstorm still has alot of his nutro food left in the container, it will last about a month. Is it necessary to mix in the Blue Buffalo to do a gradual switch over, or can I just start it. Sandstorm has done well on the Nutro, stools are fine, no problems.
Thanks!
Karen

A gradual switch is always recommended to prevent digestion issues. The primary protein may be the same, lamb, but the way the foods are formulated and other ingredients are most likely different.

You should always gradually introduce new food to prevent a gastro upset. I recently transitioned Bailey for 2 weeks to her new food without any issues.

Since you have plenty of nutro left, it should be easy to mix the two foods together for a week or two.

Thanks,
That makes sense, even though some of the ingredients are the same, we don't want to take any chances. I actually knew the answer to this, but was hoping that I could just start him on the new food, yes, I can be a brat.
Sandstorm agrees,

It really depends on what you have been doing with your dog. Since most people choose one brand and dog stays with that kibble for long time there is no development for good ability to adjust and tolerate wide variety of foods. It is not natural for animals but convenient for humans. So in such case yes, you have to slowly transition your pup to new food. For those who feed everything and anything there is no problem starting new food.
Breeder I got Leo from, biologist by degree, starts adding all kinds of baby food to puppies kibble once they old enough so by the time puppies are ready to go to new homes they have experienced many varieties of meats and veggies. Leo had no problem switching to raw/ new kibble/ homemade treats at the moment notice. I did give small amount of new food at first and once I was sure there is no problems we go full speed. Che in his 13 months has trialed probably every decent kibble out there- some were given as gifts, some trial bags were bought at clearances etc. Nothing fazed him.

I do tend to stick to one food, yes it convenient but also because Sandstorms breeder has done this and her dogs have been so healthy. Once I transition SS to Blue B lamb, I suppose I could also try the chicken too. But I don't ever want to try anything too rich,

Yep, my puppies had had everything from kibble to wet food to raw to baby food. The only digestion problems were when one puppy went to straight kibble mixed with pumpkin.

My kibble fed dog gets whatever bag of food looks good right then, then that bag gets mixed with whatever mix is left from the previous bag. I think there are three different dry foods mixed in the can right now. :smile2: He never has gastro issues, so it must be working.

What about used empty cigarette packs? Sandstorm seems to like those, even though I have told him a million times that dogs don't smoke.
