Teaching to Tug

Hi,

Not too long ago there was thread about building drive and teaching your dog to tug. I can't seem to locate it.

Anyone remember?

Thanks

Nope, I don't remember!

But as much as my boys enjoy it, it's not necessarily something to encourage - or so say some dog experts. Some say that it promotes aggressive/dominant behaviour. I'm on the fence on that.

When I do play tug with my boys, when play is finished, I always "win".

I also use it as a training tool. When I say "leave it", they do.

They love tug...they will tug with me, and they will tug with each other...their favourite tug toy is the Skineez Duck. With a neck, tail, two legs and two wings, there is lots to latch onto. Plus the squeaker also encourages them to play as well.

If you want to play tug, I recommend the Skineez product line (p.s. we also have a now very sad looking squirrel which remains one of their favourites)

Yes! There was a thread. The search function isn't working for me right now. I pm'd Kelly to see if it can get fixed.

Then....maybe we can link it to this thread. There was some really good information on it!

Barb - your Skineez sounds like Emma's No Stuffit. She has a penguin which is a good tug toy. She loved the squeaker at each end and would spend hours squeaking in front on Mom. I didn't have to teach her to tug, she picked it up quickly. I didn't do much tug when she was little but more so now and also try to use it for training.

yeah that was it
imo
TUG is THE thing to do if you want to do work on Agility and eventually build speed, drive, energy, trust and fun... Tugging makes a shy dog confident and it definitely always makes YOU the most fun thing around... makes your recalls so much easier later, lol... Also will be the best reward for your dog down the road!

Toffee didn't use to tug in class at all... he was too concerned about everything going ona round him.. now I can lift him off the ground with his tugging toy.. lol, cuz I ended up letting him win the game A LOT... even if it was only little weeny tugs in the beginning, hahahaha
