Teething late....should i worry?

Angus is now 7.5 months old. He has had a rough teething and has been running late compared to his sisters on every parameter.

He has lost most of his teeth, bite is great so far. His upper canines though are still just his baby teeth, with no sign of new teeth budding in yet. His lower canines are completely in. Has his molars and incisors.

Any advice, experience with teething? I am thinking of taking him for a visit and X-ray to see if the little buggers are hiding up there!

Most puppies do not start to lose their teeth til 6 months. I was reading on a website yesterday that they lose them from 6-8 months. but if you're worried you can try for the xray

Olive's canines were the last to fall out, and the new tooth was actually pushing through quite a bit before the baby one detached. She was around 8 months when this happened. I, too, was worried, but the vet said no problem; if they don't come out by her spay at 8.5 months, she would yank them then. Well, not exactly 'yank'.. Extract!

My dog didn't lose her canines until she was about 7 months old. My vet said the same thing as Biowicks, that if they didn't fall out by her spay, he would remove them. Thankfully, they fell out before her spay.

You can usually tell when a tooth is about to fall out. It will start to turn purple, especially at the gum line.

thank you all for the responses.

My vet is a good friend of mine and she has been watching them closely. She just expressed some mild concern the other day as all the other teeth are fully in and his two uppers are not even budding and the baby teeth are not whoing any sign of coming out!

Good to hear there are some other late bloomers out there:wink2:

Well......bad news on the teeth front. Angus's upper canine teeth budded this weekend, and they are lanced on both sides. I am just distraught.

He is at the vets right now getting xray and then a surgical plan.

I was so hoping it wasn't this......

If anyone has had any experience with this I would love to hear what the plan was and how it ended up?

I am sorry to hear this, and embarrassed to admit that I did not know about this in shelties. I looked around the web, and there are vet orthodontists treating this defect with what amounts to braces (which is the way similar things are treated in humans). Here's a link to some information: http://veterinarynews.dvm360.com/dvm/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=374305&pageID=2

I don't know that braces would be any cheaper, or if Angus is a candidate, but it's one more avenue to explore. It would at least save his teeth.
