The evil scissors

I'm a big fan of slowly introducing things. The approach sort of depends on what he hates about them (is it the sight of them? is it the sound they make?)

So first, I'd just lay the scissors out around the house when you're doing things that your dog likes. So maybe they're next to him while he eats, or they're on the floor where you throw the ball and play fetch.

Then, I would hold them in my hand just for a second while you're holding him (like you're about groom him), then give him a cookie and let him go. Teach him that if he looks at the scissors and doesn't react, he gets a treat. Then, touch him with the scissors, and give him a treat. Keep moving forward with this regimen until you're able to pretend to cut, and then actually cut.

Just take things REALLY slowly. I know it's a pain, but it's worth it. If you start to get a reaction, go back a step. It might take a few weeks, but soon he'll start thinking that the scissors mean cookies.

I agree. Pretty much the same approach to use whenever you imtoduce something new. I took a similar approach with the dremmel.
