The out of sight stays...

I confess, I did very little in training this exercise. It just sort of worked, for awhile. He laid down on the sit last Sunday in the ring...

so last night at class, we practiced stays separately - and successfully.

Then with a group. He's been having sweaty paw prints, which I was reading as stress. The wet paw prints are mostly gone, but the laying down is new.

After having so much trouble with Bobby's sit stays, I am presuming that it is me. I have failed to teach Justus what is required.

I don't use big corrections, I might give a neutral sounding verbal to sit him.

What has worked for you?

I went with "the evil eye" til the dog got I meant seriously DON'T move when I do this. Then while increasing distance I would look around or turn my back. My deck has a corner and I started walking around it and back quickly. Finally, I would just go aroud and stay a bit.

I also put our "rug" in the kitchen and I would put the dogs in a sit or down stay while preparing dinner. I thought if they could hold steady on that they were ready to hold steady through anything, nuclear war included. Random stopping by and treating and continuing the sit or down helped it be an unknown how long to expect.

Melli downs after a short time though, and that is a function of her aged overweight status -- but she did much better in class than in October so I think her muscles are strengthening.

I'm getting good results with the Fitpaws egg to improve his core muscles which is making his sit look more comfortable. Still though, around two minutes he rocks back and splays those feet. I wonder if he needs to see the chiropractor.

You know, I think Bobby's issue of standing up when I left the ring had something to do with the discomfort of the bladder/protstrate tumor???? (too late now, I miss you Bobby)
