to Flop, or Not To Flop

When I got Josie she, of course, had beautiful floppy ears. A few weeks later one started standing up and did, as shown in my profile picture. She is 15 weeks old and in the couple of months she's been with us, both ears have stood straight up at one time, but in the past couple of weeks they have both started flopping again. Is this normal? At what point will I know whether they are going to stay floppy or if they will stand up?

wonky ears

It is a toss up on puppies. Some keep their tipped ears, some at teething will have them stand up, some resume, others don't. Kaleigh's started out tipped, hit teething and up they went and the left one was really wonky, and so I chose to glue them..I think I stopped around 8 mths as they were holding, but they would have been prick if they were not glued...Savannah has very thin ear leather, she had tipped ears, then almost hound ears-I am wondering if the cold temps did that to her because they would just fall over in colder weather, now with all her teeth in they are trying to stand up-she is 7 mths and I decided to use a bit of gum on one that looks like it will be an issue. Most breeders recommend gluing/taping to get those perfectly tipped ears. Few pups have ears that naturally keep their shape. My 2nd sheltie had perfect ears, never went wonky, never had to do anything. Many threads on the subject...

what a sweet face Josie has, she will be a LOOKER!!!

Cubs had really flopped ears as a little guy -- in fact people here thought there would no way they would go prick. At about 4 months one crept up with just a slight furl to it and the other is perfectly tipped. I worked for quite some time on the one and got it down nicely. Over time, months, he is now 10 months, it has crept back to where it wants to be with a slight furl. It depends on whether he is relaxed and where the ears are radar-wise. The ONE thing I wanted was equal ears -- up or down but not one one each. Now, well, it's just Cubby and love is blind so we just see his amazing soul and not focus on the unequally tipped ears. It looks fine in person though pictures look totally dorky.
