Toothless Shelties

Has anyone heard of Flossies... ? my sister gives this to her dog (not a sheltie) and said they are terrific. I have owned 6 shelties and all of them have had terrible teeth. I hate putting them to sleep for this. I try brushing but it does not seem to do a great job. They have never had anything but dry food. I have 2 shelties right now, both rescues. One had half her teeth removed before i got her.
 
We took Scout to have her spaying done last week. During her initial exam (she is 1 year old, but brand new to us), the doctor saw that she had a good deal of tartar build-up and suggested cleaning her teeth while she was under.

During surgery, the doctor found that 2 of her teeth were "crossing over" her canines, so they extracted them.

I was surprised that at such a young age, she would need the cleaning.

Never owning a Sheltie before, are the teeth something to watch carefully? We have 2 GSP's and now at age 5, they have not yet needed a cleaning.

Sheltie teeth

I have been owned by 5 shelties and 3 of the 5 have had very bad tartar on their teeth. My 2 current shelties are 1 yr and 3 yrs and so haven't yet had a problem. I used to brush my other shelties teeth, it helped a little. Then I bought a scraper and used to work that as much as I could but the back teeth I could not get to and they were the worst. We only feed dry kibble and dry bones to help with the problem but shelties do seem to be prone to tartar build up.
 
It seems that each Sheltie is different, I wonder how much is genetics. Of our three, my 10 year old is toothless...her teeth began to literally rot in her mouth at age 7. My 16 month old had some tartar buildup at age one which has improved since with brushing and treating his drinking water, and my three year old has great teeth, according to my vet. I've done the same thing with all three -- brushed their teeth and using Orafresh three times a week in their water. The Orafresh does seem to help long term, and the brushing is a must.
