The very first tracking lesson I took had the tracklayer going 25 steps dropping a little food in each footstep. It was on lush grass in the morning dew, you could see the track. I was standing with my dog at the start flag (a little utility marker) and the track layer got my dogs attention and dropped the glove with the treat on top. I let my dog explore and find the food, and when he reached the glove we had a praise party. Repeated that with less food the third time. That was the first outing. From there the tracks grew longer with less food until he was blowing by the food drops to get to the jackpot at the glove. Then we used food only on turns, and at the glove food came from my pocket.... Then my friend moved away and no more mornings talking dogs, drinking coffee and letting the tracks age...
Enjoy, hope you and your dog find much happiness and teamwork out on the tracks! I really like the book, tracking from the ground up with Sandy Ganz. There is a great book about laying tracks by Barb Mueller. If I remember right...I got it from Dogwise.
