Training to herd (kinda)

Ok, I'm in a little bit of sticky situation here. I want to train my shelties to herd. Pretty common, right? Well not exactly, the thing is I have nothing for them to herd.:confused2: We might get a few chickens but its not set in stone, yet. Is there any way of training them, then giving them the exposer to the chickens? We only have one dog I'm worried about, as far as having the birds for lunch! :rolleyes2:
Any advise?:fl

That just made me laugh, Beau herds me all the time. If he doesn't like a particular street, he steps in front of me and make me cross. If he thinks we are going the wrong way(when I'm changing direction to go a different way) he jumps in front of me. I have to tell him verbally that we are going in the right direction, we are just going a different way. Then he starts walking down the street. I've had people on the street looking at me quite oddly and one man asked me,"Does he ever answer back?" To which I say,"Absolutely"

Ha!Ha! I can totally relate! I'm not having any trouble training them to herd ME, unfortunately, they are more than willing to do it without training! When I was little my old sheltie would herd me around the yard, and if I didn't come when Mom or Dad would call me that little boy would cut me off and chase me in my parents direction. It was so funny! But it would be nice to have any suggestions for herding books or something like that.

herding is one sport that you need to find a good instructor- you really can't learn it from a book.
contact dog clubs in your area and ask about herding instructors that you could work with.

Is there any instructors in the Lubbock area. I can't go a long way so it'd have to be fairly local. I can't seem to find any.:o
