Trifexis Harmful?

Yesterday I met a lady with two Shelties. During our conversation she asked if we used Trifexis and I said we did. She said it was harmful to Shelties and would lead to renal failure and early death. This was based on two Shelties she lost after 4 years and advise from her Vet to NEVER use this medication again.

Has anyone else heard of this or had experience with this?

I have heard some horror stories about Trifexis and I admit I would never use it. Some dogs do OK on it but honestly, I don't want to roll the dice that my dogs won't. Every chemical repellent has potentially dangerous side effects, but some are worse than others and the reports of dogs who've had serious incidents more numerous.

Unfortunately, it becomes finding the lesser of several evils using these things. I recently learned that K9 Advantix, which I've used, can make Shelties more prone to gallbladder mucoceles. My best advice is to do as much research as possible and make an informed decision. Be aware that your vet may not always know about the side effects to specific breeds, like Shelties. My vet is wonderful but I've brought him information about Shelties that he wasn't aware of. A good resource is the Health link on the American Shetland Sheepdog Association website.( http://americanshetlandsheepdogassociation.org/ )

As far as I know, there have been owner CLAIMS that Trifexis injured their dogs. However (and it's possible I missed it) I have never seen any actual scientific data that points to Trifexis as the cause. Everything out there is anecdotal.

That being said, every medicine has the potential to cause side effects. So, as Ann said, do your research and decide what is the best option.

I have used Trifexis for Lady and my Lucky, never had a problem. Ii doesn't interfere with Lady's thyroid pill either.
I use this term quite often its like a crap shoot. Its the same in humans, the doctors described a pill for my husband
and holy cow he swelled up. When bad things happen with any med it is knocking wrong with another med, or
the system can't handle the med. My statin that I take gives me cramps in my legs. I am always tested to see if
all is working. Some pills will give liver problems in dogs and humans.
Yes do your research and talk to your vet
