Trimming Out Ear Hair/Fur

Hi Forum,

I am new to this forum today 12/22/12. However, this is my fourth Sheltie. This Sheltie I am paying special attention to 'great' ear tipping.

I am getting ready to tip and brace the ears of my 10 week old Sheltie. "Tazzle" seems to have a lot of ear hair. I can't remember back if my other Shelties had as much ear fur or not. Seems like they did not. I use the Japanese Ear Tape method for tipping and bracing. What is the best way to trim, shave, or cut the fur in the ears down to the skin; before applying the tape? Obviously without nicking, cutting, or hurting the ears.

If someone has a method to get the ear fur out, without causing blood or sores, please let me know with as many safety specifics as possible. Also, does anyone have facts on whether or not the hair will be growing back - under and while - the Japanese Ear Tape is in place?

That is a great question. I only trim the wild hairs. I asked the vet about taking the hair down and he said no way. The hair protects the ears inside.

Ohhhh!!! Lil' Lady has alot of ear wax, I use this stuff that cost $30 a bottle to keep her ears clean from the vet. That is why I wanted to get the hair down. The vet stated her system produces the wax jut like in humans. Well Lil' Lady somedays thinks she is human and I remind her she is a dog.

I hope you get some responses from some breeders here or those in the know I would love to hear what they have to say.
 
I've never used Japanese tape, but I assume its similar to ear gluing techniques.

I do not believe you want to trim the hair back to bare skin. This would be extremely irritating to the dog. I think with tape, just like gluing, you want to glue hair to hair only.

No matter technique you use, you want to have a good adhesive remover like Detachol. I made the mistake of not having it handy and ended up having to cut out the adhesive....and then there was no more hair to glue to. Tipping ended at that point.

The best resource for grooming Shelties is the Illustrated Guide to Sheltie Groom by Barb Ross, but it can be a little overwhelming.

I find myself using techniques similar to this video. Good enought for a companion pet....

I almost never use straight shears on their ears. Only the thinning shears. Much harder to make a mistake. And the plucking technique that she uses in the video, really does work. Sometimes, I pluck their ears while we are cuddled watching TV

What more would you like on trimming of ear fur?

What specifically are you looking for that has not been answered yet?
