Trying to herd while running

my dog is still a pup (12 weeks), so we haven't done any official agility training yet, but one of the things i've been working w/ him on is running. he started out really good (not crossing, not nipping), then one day he decided it'd be more fun to try and herd me while running. now he likes getting under my feet and nipping my legs. how can i curb this behavior without diminshing his excitement for performance? he has a lot of drive and energy and i don't want to ruin that. i'd guess this isn't all that uncommon w/ shelties, being herding dogs and all. lol. thanks :)

Have you done any circle work with him? I did this with my girl when she was a puppy to keep her from herding or crossing in front or behind me.

The idea is simple. Basically, you walk in circles of varying sizes with your dog on the outside of you. Reward the dog for staying next to you (on the outside). If the dog crosses your path, or gets too far ahead or behind, you are either going too fast or not rewarding enough. As the dog starts to get the idea, you can start to move faster, and not reward quite as often. But remember that you want your dog to be successful, so don't push him too hard. Make sure you work both sides.

I have a PDF file that describes it in more detail if you'd like. Just send me a private message and let me know.

Another thing you can try is to simply stop moving and ignore her when she nips at legs and heels. Stopping and ignoring her takes the fun out of the game. She may bark a little in frustration just ignore her until she's calm then treat and restart the game.

If you feel teeth on skin, add a loud OUCH! to the stop and ignore.

Basically this is making the play, and this is supposed to be fun, on your terms and won't teach her to slow down since, once she has her head about her again, you are continuing the game.
