Unbelievable, Meadow also has a bad gallbladder

Well folks, you can't make this stuff up. Meadow has been on an increased dose of phenobarbital for her seizures which necessitates an exam and lab work to check her liver. So 10/2 we go in, she checks out perfect, blood drawn, wait for results.

Vet calls the next day and her pheno level is too high and her bile acids are also elevated. Need to reduce dose and recheck. Then my vet says, "She's related to Eli, right? I wonder if it's worth checking her gallbladder?" Now, she's only 4 so was not intending to scan her yet for a year or two, but she and I both like being thorough. So went in for an ultrasound on 10/8. My vet comes back in once again with a shocked expression and says "her GB is WORSE than Eli's!"

My jaw literally dropped. She called the surgeon for us again and that poor vet was SO upset for us, got us in the next week (today). She did another ultrasound and showed it to us. There is a big ball of solidified goo taking up most of the gallbladder, leaving only a small channel for it to drain into the small intestine. It is, indeed, BAD.

So 2 1/2 months after Eli, Meadow is having her own GB surgery on 10/28. Feeling very dumped on here, I can tell you all. Blessing is, Elijah is doing great, so holding onto the thought that once again, we caught it early enough, even though it's so big, her liver blood test is normal and she has no symptoms.

I did let our breeder know and she was speechless. I urged her to have Meadow's mom tested as she is Eli's sister and a favorite dog of hers. It's been nothing but medical crapola this whole year, starting with my rotator cuff surgery, all 3 dogs with issues, etc. Good grief.

OMG.... shocked!!!! Sometimes these gut feelings serve us so well, so glad you all followed yours!

So Meadow's gallbladder is almost completely blocked? WOW!!!!!

With all that has gone on these past few months and these gallbladder issues popping up so young, all over the place, makes you wonder what is going on and what are these poor puppers ingesting or being exposed to that we are not aware of?! All of us, we do our best to be educated and make smart choices for our pups, to protect them... think its safe to say probably more educated than at least some of the general sheltie owning public because of this here forum.

Will be thinking of you all on the 28th. Glad to hear Elijah is doing well after his surgery!

I am so, so sorry about Meadow, Sharon, and for all you've been through. If there is any bright spot here, it's that you caught it unexpectedly. Thank heaven for that. I start ultrasounding at 5, makes me wonder if I should be doing it sooner.

Will be sending many good thoughts, prayers and positive vibes for Meadow on the 28th. :hugs

Wow, 4yrs old. I can't believe it That is so lucky you had those bloods and the vet was on to it. I don't check mine until they are older. Should I get Kismet checked, she's 5 soon but is petrified of the vets, and then there's the cost.

What is happening with gallbladders? It's showing up in Australia too and we have mostly UK and European lines here.

I sure wish I knew what is causing a tsunami of GB mucoceles in our dogs. There is a vet on the board of the ASSA who is pushing for research into this, my breeder told me. Really sucks.

There's an extensive amount of research and studies being done by the ASSA on Sheltie gallbladder mucoceles that has been ongoing for several years. There is information and updates on the ASSA website.

IMHO, and the veterinary surgeons I've talked with agree, the gallbladder problem was introduced to our breed genetics starting with one dog at some point and has since spread into many breeding lines. Unfortunately, until breeders as a whole start to acknowledge this, test for it regularly with ultrasounds and discontinue the use of breeding stock prone to GBM, it will continue to be a problem. That's what it took to start to breed out the MDR problem in Shelties.
