Update-Chandler went to the vet today

Chandler started turning away from his dog food the end of Feb. beginning of March at first we thought it was boredom, I tried a food he had eaten previously he ate it for a couple days and turned away from that,we had him meds to increase his appetite, I've tried every high quality food on the market including frozen and freeze dried raw,I tried every meat in the grocery store cooked and raw,A couple weeks ago he ate almost a whole lamb chop on 2 occasions and has turned away from them now. 2 foods I haven't tried are Origins which I have on order and I saw a post about fromm which I hadn't tried so I will order that also. The only thing I can get him to eat is a Merrick texas taffy it's jerky, a couple milkbones which I never gave them before but my friend had some and he ate it so I bought some, and once in a while a pork filet jerky strip with glucosamine and chondroitin added. My vet also gave me a liquid vitamin supplement. At this point what ever he will eat I'll feed him.

That sounds like what happened to Smudge a few months ago. Only he was starving himself completely (he was only eating about 1/4 a cup a day), and he was throwing up everything he ate on top of that. We never did figure out what was wrong. He is still a really picky eater, and he will not accept some treats. He's been moved from rx food to a food for dogs with sensitive stomachs.

I'm glad Smudge is doing better. Chandler was vomiting in the beginning and still does once in a while but not much to vomit. We had him on nausea meds and also tried rx and sensitive stomache food but he won't eat it. It was a good suggestion though thanks.

You probably tried it, but have you ever given him meat baby food such as chicken, turkey or beef. Stay away from lamb baby food as they put onion in it and ham its too salty. I've had good luck with it when pets wouldn't eat, you can also easily mix it with other foods as favoring. Just a thought. Also try a flat dish sometimes sick animals don't like putting their heads in bowls.

Very odd! That almost exactly describes what Smudge was going through! The nausea meds the vet gave Smudge did not work, and he continues to throw up. Some of them were for motion sickness, and Smudge does not get motion sickness. It was Cerenia. The other one was Cimetidine. I just looked cimetidine up and it says it is for acid reflux?

I do second Justicemom's advice for the baby food. Linda (Lightplum) suggested it to me, and Smudge gobbled it right up. They make it in the Gerber brand, but they were out of the kind I needed when I went in - of course! So I had to get the other brand. It has green on the label. Is it beechnut brand? I don't remember. I never stocked infants when I worked overnights, and I don't have a kid, so I can't remember.

Yes, its beechnut. Our Wal-Mart doesn't always have squash in Gerber, and Beechnut is just as good (and cheaper). Though we do go with Gerber meat flavors to be safe.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes I tried the turkey and beef baby food and when Chandler was diagnosed with the pancreatitis I started using a plate with him, mostly because he wouldn't eat unless I fed him by hand when he first came home from the hospital and I just continued feeding him on one since than. I just ordered a book Rachel suggested in a post a while ago so I hope to find some ideas in there. Keep the suggestions coming though. I'm still waiting for his blood test results and will post when I receive them.

The med I have for nausea is Cerenia also 60mg. He also takes sulfasalazine on a daily basis since he was origionally diagnosed with pancreatitis along with pancrezyme. I tried the Gerber brand food it won't hurt to try beechnut. I'm getting desperate here. It's odd though if I go to the fridge he comes over like ooh what are you getting Mom so I'll try to give him something he smells it and walks away.
